為天子削瓜者副之，He who pares a melon for the son of Heaven should divide it into four parts and then into eight,
巾以絺。 and cover them with a napkin of fine linen.
為國君者華之，For the ruler of a state, he should divide it into four parts,
巾以綌。 and cover them with a coarse napkin.
為大夫累之， To a great officer he should (present the four parts) uncovered.
士疐之， An inferior officer should receive it (simply) with the stalk cut away.
庶人齕之。 A common man will deal with it with his teeth.
