They then proceeded to launch an eastern invasion into Zheng. Prince Yan of Zheng led an army against them, sent the eastern outlying forces to surround them at Wu, and defeated them at Qiuyu. Huang Xu went to Chu to present a report of victory.

| | The Jin people returned Prince Guchen of Chu and the corpse of Lianyin Xianglao to Chu, in exchange for Zhuying. At that time, Xun Shou had already become an assistant commander of the central army, so the people of Chu agreed to this arrangement. The king sent off Zhuying and said, "Will you resent me for this?" Zhuying replied, "Two states were waging war. Your servant is not capable and could not fulfill his duties, so he was captured." "The officials did not use my blood to smear the war drums but allowed me to return for execution; this is your kindness, O Lord." "I am truly unworthy. Who else could I possibly resent?" The king asked, "Then you are grateful to me?" Zhuying replied, "Two states sought the safety of their states and wished to relieve their people. Each restrained their anger in order to forgive each other." "They released two groups of prisoners to foster good relations between them." "If the two states have become friendly, your servant was not involved in this matter. Who would dare to claim gratitude?" The king said, "When you return, how will you repay me?" Zhuying replied, "Your servant is not in a position to bear resentment, and Your Majesty is also not in a position to receive virtue. Without resentment or virtue, I do not know what there is to repay." The king said, "Even so, you must tell me, O Bu Gu." Zhuying replied, "By the grace of Your Majesty, this servant has been allowed to return his bones to Jin. If my lord executes me there, I shall die and yet not decay." If Your Majesty shows me mercy and spares my life, granting me to your loyal subject Shou as a favor, then I shall request from my lord that he execute me in the ancestral temple. In this case too, I would die and yet not decay. "If I am not executed but instead allowed to succeed in my ancestral duties, and if I am assigned a position of responsibility leading a contingent force to maintain the borders, even if I encounter officials from your side, I shall not dare to disobey. I will exert all my strength until death without any divided loyalty, fulfilling my duty as a subject—this is how I would repay you." The king said, "Jin cannot yet be contended with." He bestowed upon him a grand farewell ceremony and sent him back.

| | In winter, the eleventh month of this year, Duke of Jin sent Xun Gheng to visit and also sought to renew an alliance. Duke of Wei sent Sun Lianfu to visit and also seek a renewal of the alliance. The Duke asked Zang Xuanshu, "In Jin, Zhonghang Bo holds the third rank. In Wei, Sun Zi is an upper-ranking minister. Who should be given precedence?" Zang Xuanshu replied, "The upper-ranking ministers of a secondary state correspond to the middle-ranking officials in a major state. The middle-ranking ministers correspond to their lower-ranking officials, and the lower-ranking ministers correspond to the senior gentlemen of the major state." "The upper-ranking minister of a minor state corresponds to the lower-ranking minister in a major state, the middle-ranking minister corresponds to their senior gentlemen, and the lower-ranking minister corresponds to their junior gentlemen." "Ranking should be like this; it is an ancient system." "Wei, in relation to Jin, cannot be considered a secondary state." "Jin is the leader of the alliance; therefore, its envoy should be given precedence." On the Bingwu day, a treaty was made with Jin. On the Dingwei day, a treaty was concluded with Wei; this followed proper ritual protocol.

| | While Zhuying was in Chu, a merchant from Zheng named Jiang planned to stuff him into a leather bag and smuggle him out. After making the plan, they had not yet acted when the people of Chu returned him. The merchant went to Jin, and Zhuying treated him kindly. The merchant truthfully recounted what had happened. He said, "I have not earned the merit; how could I claim its reward? As a humble man, I cannot falsely accuse a noble gentleman." He then went to Qi.
