王沿，字圣源，大名馆陶人。生卒年均不详，少年时好读《春秋》。进士出身，试秘书省校书郎。历官彭城、新昌县令，后改相州观察推官。张知白很器重他，擢拔为著作佐郎，直昭文馆，泾州观察使。庆历二年（1042年），李元昊入寇，副都总管葛怀敏战死，李元昊趁胜进攻渭州，王沿令州民登城，大举旗帜以虚张声势，敌遂引去。历官龙图阁直学士、刑部郎中、知虢州。官至天章阁待制。晚年谪河中府，卒于任上。有文集二十卷，《唐志》二十一卷。
