横渠曰：“形而后有气质之性，善反之，则天地之性存焉。”如禀得气清明者，这道理只在里面；禀得气昏浊者，这道理亦只在里面，只被这昏浊遮蔽了。譬之水，清底，里面纤微皆可见；浑底，里面便见不得。孟子说性善，只见得大本处，未说到气质之性细碎处。程子谓：“论性不论气，不备；论气不论性，不明，二之则不是。”孟子只论性，不知论气，便不全备。若三子虽论性，却不论得性，都只论得气，性之本领处又不透彻。荀子只见得不好人底性，便说做恶；扬子只见得半善半恶人底性，便说做善恶混；韩子见得天下有许多般人，故立为三品，说得较近。其言曰：“仁义礼智信，性也；喜怒哀乐爱恶欲，情也。”似又知得性善。荀扬皆不及，只是过接处少一个“气”字。淳
