| | Peihei Jingwang Mu, when Emperor Xianzong was still crown prince, was especially favored. Moreover, Mu had a modest and respectful character and loved scholars; no famous Confucian scholars or men of long-standing virtue failed to visit his door. In the middle of Yongping, when legal regulations were particularly strict, Mu then declined and cut off guests, devoting himself to music and entertainment. At the end of each year, he sent a central official with jade to pay homage and celebrate. He summoned him and said, "If the imperial court questions me, what words will you use in your reply?" The envoy said, "Your Highness is loyal and filial, kind and benevolent, reveres the virtuous and delights in scholars. Though I am but a lowly ant, how could I dare not speak the truth?" Mu said, "Ah, you are putting me in danger!" "These were merely the actions of my youth when I was striving to improve myself." "Official, you should reply that since I inherited the title, my aspirations have declined and become idle; I indulge in music, beauty, and enjoy hunting and horseplay." The envoy accepted the order and departed.
