| | Fan Chong's fellow native of Dongguan, Wang Mang, Pang An, courtesy name Shaizi; Xu Xuan, courtesy name Jiaozi, from Linyi, Donghai; Xie Lu, courtesy name Ziqi; and Yang Yin each raised armies. Together they totaled tens of thousands of men who again followed Fan Chong.

樊崇欲与王莽战，恐其众与莽兵乱，乃皆朱其眉，以相识别，由是号曰赤眉。 |
| | Fan Chong wanted to fight Wang Mang's forces, but he was afraid his men would be confused with Wang Mang's soldiers. Therefore, he had them all paint their eyebrows red as a means of identification. From then on, they were known as the Chimei ("Red Eyebrows").
