樊曄與世祖有舊，世祖嘗於新野坐文書事被拘，時曄為市吏，餽餌一笥，上德之。後拜為河東都尉，臨發之官，引見雲臺，賜御食衣被。上啁曄曰：「一笥餌得都尉，何如？」曄頓首曰：「小臣蒙恩，特見拔擢，陛下不忘往舊，臣得竭死自效。」 |
| | Fan Ye had an old relationship with Emperor Shizu. Once, while Emperor Shizu was detained in Xinye on account of official documents, Fan Ye at that time served as a local clerk and sent him one bamboo basket of steamed cakes; the emperor thus felt grateful toward him. Later, he was appointed as the Commandant of Hedong. When he was about to assume his post, he was summoned for an audience at Yuntai and bestowed with imperial food, clothing, and bedding. The emperor teased Fan Ye, saying, "A single basket of steamed cakes earned you the rank of Commandant; how do you feel about that?" Fan Ye kowtowed and said, "Your humble servant has received Your Majesty's grace and been specially promoted. The Emperor does not forget old ties; I shall devote my life to serving His Majesty."

樊曄為天水郡，其政嚴猛，好申、韓之術，善惡立斷，不假下以權，道路不敢相盜，商人行旅以錢物聚於大道旁，曰：「以付樊父。」後還其物如故。道不拾遺。敘州為之語曰：「遊子常苦貧，力子天所富。寧見乳虎穴，不入冀府寺。大笑期必死，忿怒或見置。嗟我樊府君，安可再遭值。」 |
| | Fan Ye served as the governor of Tianshui Commandery. His administration was strict and vigorous; he favored the doctrines of Shen Buhai and Han Feizi, making immediate judgments on good and evil deeds without delegating authority to his subordinates. Robberies were so rare that people dared not steal from each other on roads. Merchants and travelers would gather their money and belongings by the roadside, saying, "We leave them with Father Fan." Later, they returned those items as they were. Lost articles on the road were never picked up by others. The people of Xuzhou said: "Wandering children often suffer from poverty, while diligent ones are blessed with wealth by Heaven." Better to face a tigress's den than enter Ji Fu Temple. Great laughter brings certain death; anger may lead one to be put to death. Alas, our Lord Fan, how can we ever meet another like him!"
