逢萌，字子康，北海人。少有大节，志意抗厉，家贫，给事为县亭长。尉过迎拜，问事微久。尉去，举楯挝地，叹曰：“大丈夫安能为人役耶？”遂去学问。 |
| | Feng Meng, courtesy name Zikang, was a native of Binhai. He had great integrity from an early age and his will was strong and unbending. Though poor, he served as a xiangtingchang (a local official) in the county to support himself. The magistrates passed by and paid him homage; they asked about affairs for only a short while. After the magistrates left, he raised his shield and struck the ground, sighing, "How can a man of great ambition be someone else's servant?" He then left to pursue learning.

莽居摄，子宇谏莽，而莽杀之。逢萌谓其友人曰：“三纲绝矣！不去，祸将及人。”即解冠挂东门而去。 |
| | When Wang Mang assumed the regency, his son Zi Yu advised Wang Mang, but Wang Mang killed him. Feng Meng said to his friend, "The Three Bonds have been severed! If we do not leave, disaster will soon befall us." He immediately removed his official hat and hung it at the eastern gate before leaving.

逢萌素明阴阳，知莽将败，携家属于辽东，乃首戴盆盎，哭于市，言曰：“新乎新乎！”遂潜藏。 |
| | Feng Meng had long been well-versed in the principles of yin and yang, and knowing that Wang Mang would soon fall, he took his family to Liaodong. There, he placed a pot on his head and wept in the marketplace, saying, "New? New?" He then went into hiding.

逢萌隐琅琊之劳山，非礼不动，聚落化之。北海太守遣吏奉谒，萌不诺。太守遣吏捕之，民相率以石掷吏，皆流血奔走。 |
| | Feng Meng took refuge in Laoshan, Langya, and did not act unless it conformed to propriety; the local communities were transformed by his example. The Tai Shou of Binhai sent officials with a letter of introduction, but Feng Meng did not accept it. The Tai Shou then sent officers to arrest him; the people gathered together and pelted the officers with stones, causing them all to bleed and flee in panic.

逢萌被徵上道，迷不知东西，云：“朝所徵我者，为聪明睿智，有益于政，方面不知，安能济政？”即驾而归。 |
| | When Feng Meng was summoned to the capital, he became lost and could not tell east from west. He said, "The court summons me because I am wise and intelligent, and can be of benefit to governance; yet they do not know this. How then can I help with administration?" He immediately turned his carriage around and returned home.
