| | Wang Dan, courtesy name Zhonghui, was a native of Jingzhao. During the farming season each year, he would carry wine and delicacies, and stop at a large tree by the fields to eat and drink while encouraging the farmers. He then left behind the remaining food and wine before departing.

王丹闾里有丧忧，辄度其资用，教之俭约，因为其制日定葬，其亲丧不过留殡一月，其下以轻重为差。 |
| | Whenever there was a funeral or mourning in Wang Dan's neighborhood, he would estimate the family's financial resources and advise them to be frugal. He also helped set a schedule for the burial. For his own relatives' funerals, he did not keep the coffin in temporary storage for more than one month; for others, the duration varied according to their circumstances.

王丹资性清白，疾恶豪强。时河南太守同郡陈遵，关西之大侠也。其友人丧亲，遵为护丧事，赙助甚丰。丹乃怀缣一疋，陈之于主人前，曰：“如丹此缣，出自机杼。”遵闻而有惭色。 |
| | Wang Dan was naturally upright and clean-hearted, hating evildoers and powerful bullies. At that time, Chen Zun, the governor of Henan Prefecture from the same native place as Wang Dan, was a great chivalrous man of Guanxi. When one of his friends lost a parent, Chen Zun took charge of the funeral arrangements and provided generous financial assistance. Wang Dan then carried a bolt of silk, presented it before the host, and said, "This piece of silk from me is woven by my own loom." Chen Zun heard this and showed a look of shame.

更始时，遵为大司马护军，出使匈奴，过辞于丹。丹曰：“俱遭世反覆，唯我二人为天地所遗。今子当之绝域，无以相赠，赠子以不拜。”遂揖而别，遵甚悦之。 |
| | During the reign of Gengshi, Chen Zun served as Da Sima Hujun and was sent on a mission to the Xiongnu. He passed by Dan's residence to bid him farewell. Wang Dan said, "We both have suffered through turbulent times; we are the only two people abandoned by heaven and earth." "Now that you must go to a distant land, I have nothing to give you as a gift. I will therefore offer you the gift of not bowing." He then paid him an 揖 (a formal bow) and took his leave, and Chen Zun was very pleased with this.

| | When Deng Yu pacified the Three Fu regions, he suffered from a shortage of provisions, so Wang Dan presented him with 2000 hu of wheat. Deng Yu admired his virtue and righteousness and recommended that Wang Dan be appointed to oversee Zuofengyi.

| | Situ Hou Ba wanted to form a friendship with Wang Dan. When Wang Dan was summoned for an imperial appointment, Hou Ba sent his son Yu to visit him. On the way, Yu encountered Wang Dan and kowtowed beneath his carriage; Wang Dan responded with a bow in return. Yu said, "My father wishes to form an intimate bond with you. Why are you bowing to me, your junior?" Wang Dan replied, "Your family has made such a statement, but Wang Dan has not yet agreed."

王丹子有同门生丧亲，家在中山，白丹欲往奔慰。结侣将行，丹怒挞之五十，令寄缣二匹以祠焉。或问其故，丹曰：“交道之难，未易言也。” |
| | One of Wang Dan's sons had a fellow student who lost his parent; the student's family lived in Zhongshan, and he informed Wang Dan that he wished to go there to console them. When the son gathered companions and was about to set out, Wang Dan angrily beat him fifty times with a stick and ordered him instead to send two bolts of silk for a memorial offering. Someone asked why he did this, and Wang Dan said, "The difficulty in maintaining friendships is not easy to explain."

| | Wang Dan, courtesy name Zhonggui. Initially, someone recommended a scholar to Wang Dan; Wang Dan selected and promoted him. Later, the person he had recommended was implicated in a crime, so Wang Dan was dismissed from office, and his guest felt ashamed and cut off contact with him. Soon after, Wang Dan was again summoned to serve as Taizi Taifu; he then called the guest and saw him, saying, "Why do you think so little of me?" He did not prepare a meal for him as a form of punishment but treated him just as before.
