The Han generals engaged in battle several times but suffered repeated defeats, prompting the Yue people to plot rebellion against the Han and submit to Shu instead. General Gong's forces were few and insufficient to control the situation. At this time, more than three hundred ox-drawn carts for transporting tribute arrived from a subordinate county. Gong immediately devised a plan and, at night, cut the threshold of the city gate, ordering the tribute carts to repeatedly enter and exit in reverse, making loud noises until dawn. The Yue scouts heard the continuous sound of cart wheels and noticed that the gate threshold had been cut, leading them to believe a large Han force was coming. As a result, they presented oxen and wine to 慰劳 the army, and thus the situation became peaceful again.
