| | Zhao Xiafu was a general of Tianhe. Xiao once came from Chang'an and wanted to stop at the pavilion. The pavilion official found it difficult, saying that there were noble guests passing through and the floor had been swept and cleaned; he did not want the ground to be dirtied. After a long time, he finally allowed them to stop. The official then asked, "Son of General Tianhe, when did you leave Chang'an?" How many days' journey was it?" Xiao said, "I have just arrived."

| | Zhao Xiao was an officer. Whenever he requested leave to return home, on his trips back and forth he often wore plain clothes and carried his own luggage. When passing by the postal pavilion on the road, he would only call himself a scholar, and stay at the pavilion's gate schoolhouse.

| | Zhao Xiao, courtesy name Changping, was a native of Qi, Peiguo. During the reign of Wang Mang, chaos prevailed throughout the land and people ate each other. Xiao's younger brother Li was captured by starving bandits. Upon hearing this, Xiao immediately bound himself and went to the bandits, saying, "Li has been hungry for a long time and is thin and weak; he is not as good as me who is fat." The starving bandits were greatly surprised and released them both.

趙孝，字長平，建武初，天下新定，穀食尚少，孝得穀，炊將熟，令弟禮夫妻使出，比還，孝夫妻共茹蔬菜，禮夫妻來歸，告言已食，輒獨飯之。積久，禮心怪疑，後掩伺見之，亦不肯復出，遂共蔬食，兄弟怡怡，鄉里歸德。 |
| | Zhao Xiao, courtesy name Zhangping. In the early years of Jianwu, when the empire had just been pacified and grain was still scarce, whenever Xiao obtained some grain and it was nearly cooked, he would have his younger brother Li and Li's wife go out. By the time they returned, Xiao and his wife would be eating only vegetables together. When Li and his wife came back, they were told that food had already been eaten, so Xiao always ate alone for them. After a long time, Li felt puzzled and suspicious in his heart. Later, he secretly watched and saw the truth. He also refused to go out again afterward, so they ate vegetables together. The brothers lived harmoniously, and their virtue was praised by the local community.
