朱勃，字叔陽，年十二能誦詩、書。常候馬援兄況。勃衣方領，能矩步，辭言嫻雅。援裁知書，見之自失。況知其意，酌酒慰援曰：「朱勃小器速成，智盡此耳，卒當從汝稟學，勿畏也。」勃未二十，右扶風請試守渭城宰。及援為將軍，封侯，而勃位不過縣令。援後雖貴，常待以舊恩而卑侮之，勃愈自親。及援遇讒，唯勃能終焉。 |
| | Zhu Bo, courtesy name Shuyang, at age twelve was able to recite the Book of Songs and the Book of Documents. He often visited Ma Yuan's elder brother, Ma Kuang. Bo wore square-collared robes and walked with measured steps; his words were refined and elegant. Yuan had just begun to study the classics, and upon seeing him, he was struck by a sense of inadequacy. Kuang understood his intent and poured a cup of wine to comfort Yuan, saying: "Zhu Bo is a minor talent who achieves quickly; his intelligence ends here. In the end, he will follow you to study from you. Do not fear him." Bo was not yet twenty when You Fufeng requested that he be appointed as provisional mayor of Weicheng. When Yuan became a general and was enfeoffed as marquis, however, Bo's position did not exceed that of county magistrate. Although Yuan later became powerful, he always treated him with the old kindness but also looked down on him; Bo, however, grew even more eager to be close. When Yuan was slandered, only Bo remained loyal until the end.

朱勃上書理援曰：「八年，車駕討隗囂，豪強略城，酋羌煞吏，唯獨狄道為國堅守，士民飢饉，乃噉弩煮履。寄命漏刻。援謀如涌泉，勢如轉圓。救倒懸之急，存幾亡之城。飛鳥跱衡，馬驚觸虎，物類相生，亦無不有。」 |
| | Zhu Bo submitted a memorial to defend Yuan, saying: "In the eighth year [of the reign period], when the imperial carriage campaigned against 隗 Xiu, bandits and strongmen seized cities, while chieftains of Qiang tribes killed officials. Only Dida was steadfast in defending the state; its soldiers and civilians suffered from famine, eating bowstrings and boiling shoes to survive. Their lives were entrusted to a matter of moments." Yuan's strategies flowed like a spring, and his momentum was as smooth as rolling a ball. He rescued the city from imminent collapse and saved it from near destruction. Birds perched on a balance beam, horses startled by tigers—among all things in nature, there is nothing that does not exist."

章帝下詔曰：「告平陵令、丞：縣人故雲陽令朱勃，建武中以伏波將軍爵土不傳，上書陳狀，不顧罪戾，懷旌善之志，有烈士之風。詩云：『無言不讎，無德不報。』其以縣見穀二千斛賜勃子若孫，勿令遠詣闕謝。」 |
| | Emperor Zhang issued an edict saying: "To the magistrate and assistant magistrate of Pingling: The former Yunyang county magistrate, a native of your district, Zhu Bo, during the Jianwu period, petitioned to restore the marquisate lands of the Fuwo General [Ma Yuan], which had not been passed down. He submitted a memorial without regard for punishment or blame, harboring a desire to honor virtue and displaying the spirit of a loyal patriot. The Book of Songs says: 'No words go unrewarded; no virtue goes unrepaid.' Therefore, grant two thousand hu of grain from the county's reserves to Bo's son or grandson; do not require them to travel far to the imperial court in gratitude."
