| | On the first day of the sixth month, which was a Xinwei day, there was a solar eclipse; drums were beaten and sacrifices of animals were made at the altar of the earth god. Why beat the drums and make animal sacrifices to the earth god when there is a solar eclipse? It was done to seek harmony with the yin forces. Red silk was used to encircle the altar of the earth god; some said it was to restrain the yin, others said it was to obscure it. They were afraid people might violate it, so they enclosed it.
