夏，四月，辛卯夜，恒星不見，夜中星霣如雨。恒星者何？列星也。列星不見，則何以知？夜之中星反也。如雨者何？如雨者非雨也。非雨則曷為謂之如雨？不修《春秋》曰：「雨星不及地尺而復。」君子修之曰：「星霣如雨。」何以書？記異也。 |
| | In summer, the fourth month, on the night of Xinmao, no fixed stars were visible; during midnight, meteors fell like rain. What are "fixed stars"? They refer to the constellations or star clusters. If the constellations are not visible, then how can one know? Because the stars that should be in the middle of the night sky were reversed. What does "like rain" mean? "Like rain" means it is not actual rain. If it is not rain, then why is it called "like rain"? The unedited Chunqiu says: "Stars rained down but did not reach the ground by a chi before returning." A gentleman revised it and said: "Meteors fell like rain." Why was this recorded? To record an unusual phenomenon.

| | In autumn, there was a great flood. There were no wheat or seedlings. If there are no seedlings, then why was it first said that there was no wheat and later stated that there were no seedlings? A single disaster is not recorded; the record of no seedlings comes only after it has been noted that there was no wheat. Why was this written? To record a disaster.
