| | In winter, on the Jichou day of the twelfth month, our ruler Duke Huan was buried. Burying our ruler connects the upper and lower generations. 략 If a ruler's murderer is not punished, burial should not be recorded; then why is burial mentioned here? It was not considered necessary to hold him accountable for crossing the border and carrying out punishment at that time. Duke Huan was buried before his posthumous title was bestowed; the title is given to complete one's virtue, and it was added after the matter of his death. The wise consider matters carefully; the righteous act upon principles; the benevolent remain steadfast in their virtue. With these three qualities fully possessed, one is then fit to convene [an assembly].
