"Tu" refers to the outer region, while "shi" refers to the inner region. It is absent and its region cannot be seen; this indicates that there has been an eclipse. "Shi," meaning inner, is a term used internally. "Huo," meaning outer, is a term referring to the outside. The one who causes an eclipse is internally related to the sun. Why, then, is it not stated that someone caused the eclipse? Knowing what cannot be known is itself knowledge.

Why, then, is his name not mentioned? Because he was greatly revered, his name is not mentioned.

| | In autumn, Master Wu's son came to request funeral gifts. Who was Master Wu's son? He was a great officer of the Son của Heaven. Being a great officer of the Sonของ Heaven, why is he referred to as "Master Wu's son"? The mourning period was not yet complete, and the orphan had not yet received an official title. To send someone who has not been granted a title is improper. Why, then, is the word "shi" (to send) not mentioned? Because he had no ruler. Gifts given for the deceased are called "feng," while gifts given for the living are called "fu." To refer to it as a gift being returned is proper. To request it, however, is improper. Although the Zhou did not request it, Lu could not avoid returning it. Even if Lu did not return it, the Zhou could not request it. To "request" implies uncertainty—whether one will obtain it or not is still unknown. This was a mutual censure.
