| | In the twenty-second year [of the reign period], spring, the first month of the king's calendar, a great calamity occurred. "Si," meaning to lose or be lost. "Sheng," meaning a disaster. A "zai" (disaster) is an event to be recorded, and a "shi" (loss) is the cause. It was done out of suspicion regarding the burial of the Son of Heaven. On the Kouchou day, our late lady Wenjiang was buried. A "xiaojun" is not a ruler. Why then was she called a jun? Because she was the consort of the ruler, it is appropriate to refer to her as "xiaojun." The people of Chen killed their prince Yukou. He is referred to as a "gongzi" (prince) rather than a "daifu" (minister), because the prince had not yet been appointed as a daifu. Why then was he called a gongzi? A "gongzi" is considered as important as a "daifu," and thus the title of daifu was conferred upon him to oversee other princes.

冬，公如齊納幣。納幣，大夫之事也。禮有納采，有問名，有納徵，有告期，四者備而後娶，禮也。公之親納幣，非禮也，故譏之。 |
| | In winter, the ruler went to Qi to present marriage gifts. Presenting marriage gifts is a matter for ministers. According to ritual, there are four stages: presenting betrothal gifts (na cai), inquiring about the name (wen ming), presenting formal marriage gifts (na zheng), and announcing the wedding date (gao qi). Only after all four have been completed is a marriage considered proper according to rites. For the ruler himself to personally present marriage gifts was not in accordance with ritual, so it is criticized.
