| | On the first day of the sixth month, which was a Xinwei day, there was a solar eclipse. Mentioning both "day" and "first day of the month" indicates that the eclipse occurred on the first day designated by the official calendar. Drums were beaten, and sacrifices with animals were made at the altar of the soil god. Beating drums was in accordance with ritual. Offering animal sacrifices, however, was not in accordance with ritual. When the Son of Heaven performed a rite to rescue the sun, he set up five banners and arranged five weapons and five drums; feudal lords set up three banners and arranged three drums and three weapons; Ministers struck their gates, and commoners struck wooden clappers. This was said to replenish its yang energy. Boji married into the state of Qi. Why is there no mention of a welcoming ceremony? Because the custom of welcoming was slight and not worth mentioning.

| | In autumn, there was a great flood. Drums were beaten and animal sacrifices made at the altar of the earth god and at the gate. When there is a water disaster affecting both high and low areas, it is called "a great flood." After the drums had been sounded to alert the people, offering sacrifices with animals was sufficient. To rescue the sun, one uses drums and weapons; to rescue from a flood, one uses drums to rally the people.
