| | In the first winter of Chenggong's reign, King Zhuangwang of Chu, avenging Linggong for Xia Zhengshu, led feudal lords to attack Chen. He told the people of Chen: "Do not be alarmed; I am only punishing Zhengshu." After killing Zhengshu, he annexed Chen and made it a commandery, and all his officials congratulated him. Shen Shushi had been on a mission to Qi and was returning when he alone did not offer congratulations. King Zhuang asked the reason, and he replied: "There is a saying among common people: if one leads an ox through another's field, the owner of the field may seize the ox. Passing through the field is indeed a fault, but to seize the ox—was this not excessive?" Now, Your Majesty declared Zhengshu a traitor who killed his lord and summoned feudal lords to punish him in the name of righteousness. Yet after doing so, you have annexed it for its territory—how then can you command the world?!" This is why I did not offer congratulations." King Zhuang said, "Well spoken." He then welcomed from Jin the crown prince Wu of Duke Ling and installed him as ruler, restoring Chen to its former state; this was Chenggong. | | During King Wu of Zhou's time, there were still more than a thousand marquises and feudal lords. After the reigns of Kings You and Li, the feudal lords engaged in wars to conquer one another. States such as Jiang, Huang, Hu, and Shen were too numerous to count; thus, they are not recorded in the annals (Shang) [Yun]. Grand Historian said: The virtue of Shun can truly be called supreme! He abdicated in favor of Xia, and his descendants received ancestral sacrifices through three dynasties. When the State of Chu destroyed Chen, Tian Chang seized power in Qi and eventually founded a state; his descendants continued for generations without interruption. Their posterity flourished, and there were never lacking those who held land. By the time of Yu, during the Zhou dynasty they were enfeoffed in Qi, but their status was very low and not worth mentioning. King Huai of Chu destroyed Qi; after that, King Goujian of Yue rose to prominence.
