| | During the reign of King Cheng, Zhao Wang was one of the Three Dukes: from Shanxi to the west, Zhao Wang administered it; from Shanxi to the east, Duke Zhou administered it. Since King Cheng was still young, Duke Zhou assumed regency, took charge of state affairs, and ascended the throne; Zhao Gong doubted this arrangement, so he composed "Jun Shi." "Jun Shi" did not please Duke Zhou. Duke Zhou then said, "In the time of King Tang there was Yi Yin, who received authority from the Supreme Heaven; in the reign of Taiwu, there were men like Yi Zhi and Chen Hu, who received authority from Shangdi; Wuxian managed the royal household; in the time of Zu Yi, there was a man named Wuxian; in the reign of Wu Ding, there was one such as Gan Ban: they all maintained and upheld these traditions, preserving peace and order for Yin." At this, Zhao Gong became pleased.

After Zhao Gong died, the people missed his governance and cherished the tang tree, refraining from cutting it down; they sang praises of him, composing the poem "Gan Tang."

| | Lu Mao Shou advised King Yan, "It would be better for you to cede the country to your prime minister Zi Zhi." People say Yao was a virtuous ruler because he offered the world to Xu You, who refused it. Thus, Yao gained the reputation of ceding the world without actually losing power over it. Now, if you offer your kingdom to Zi Zhi, he will certainly refuse; thus, you would be acting in the same way as Yao." King Yan therefore entrusted his country to Zi Zhi, who thereby gained great power. Some said, "Yu recommended Yi, but later appointed Qi's people as officials." And when he grew old, he considered Qi's people to be unfit to rule the world and passed power on to Yi. Later, Qi and his faction attacked Yi, seizing power from him. The world said that Yu's name was passed on to Yi, but in reality he allowed Qi to take it himself. "Now Your Majesty says you have entrusted the country to Zi Zhi, yet all officials are from the crown prince's faction; this is merely giving the name of power to Zi Zhi while in reality it is the crown prince who holds authority." King Yan therefore collected all seals from officials ranked above three hundred stones and submitted them to Zi Zhi. Zi Zhi sat facing south, acting as king, while Kuai grew old and no longer participated in politics. Instead, he became a subject, with all state affairs decided by Zi Zhi.

| | After three years, the country fell into great chaos, and the people were terrified. General Shi Bei and Crown Prince Ping plotted to attack Zi Zhi. linha The generals said to King Min of Qi, "Take advantage of this opportunity to intervene; we will surely defeat Yan." King Qi therefore sent someone to say to Crown Prince Ping of Yan, "I have heard of the virtue of the crown prince; you are going to set aside private interests and establish public justice, rectify the relationship between ruler and minister, and clarify the positions of father and son." "My country is small and insufficient to take a leading or following role." "Nevertheless, it will be entirely up to the crown prince to give orders." The crown prince therefore gathered his faction and a crowd; General Shi Bei surrounded the palace, attacking Zi Zhi but failing to succeed. General Shi Bei and the common people counterattacked Crown Prince Ping; General Shi Bei was killed and his body displayed publicly. | | After the fall of Yan, King Zhao ascended the throne. He humbled himself and offered generous rewards to attract virtuous men. He said to Guo Wei, "Qi took advantage of my country's chaos and attacked Yan. I am fully aware that Yan is small and weak, insufficient to exact revenge." "Nevertheless, if I can truly find virtuous men with whom to govern the country and avenge my ancestors' disgrace, that would be my wish." "If you, sir, see anyone suitable, you may personally serve him." Guo Wei said, "If the king truly wishes to attract virtuous men, he should start with me. | | In the fourth year of King Xi's reign, King Zhao of Qin died. King Yan ordered his prime minister Li Fu to establish friendly relations with Zhao and presented five hundred gold pieces as a wine offering to King Zhao. Returning, he reported to King Yan, "All the strong men of Zhao have died at Changping; their orphans are not yet grown. We can attack them." The king summoned Yue Jian, Lord of Changguo, and asked him about it. He replied, "Zhao is a country constantly at war; its people are experienced in military affairs. It cannot be attacked." The king said, "I can attack one with five times the force." He replied, "No, it is not advisable." King Yan became angry, and all his ministers believed the attack was feasible. The king finally raised two armies, with 2,000 chariots; Li Fu led one to attack Gao, while Qing Qin attacked Dai. Only the official Jiang Qu said to King Yan, "Having established a treaty and exchanged friendly relations with another state, we gave five hundred gold pieces for their king's wine. Now that our envoy has returned and we attack them instead, this is inauspicious; the campaign will not succeed." King Yan did not listen and personally led a contingent of troops to follow. Jiang Qu pulled on King Yan's sash to stop him, saying, "Your Majesty must not go in person; if you do, the campaign will surely fail." The king kicked him with his foot. Jiang Qu wept and said, "I am not doing this for myself, but for Your Majesty!" The Yan army reached Songzi. Zhao sent Lin Po to command its forces and defeated Li Fu at Gao. Yue Cheng defeated Qing Qin (Yue Cheng) at Dai. Yue Jian fled to Zhao. Lin Po pursued them for more than five hundred li and laid siege to their capital. | | Grand Historian said: Zhao Gong Shi can truly be called a benevolent man! Even the mulberry trees and willows still think of it, how much more so for its people? Yan (North) [Outer] was pressured by the Man and He tribes externally, and sandwiched between Qi and Jin internally; situated among powerful states in a difficult position, it was the weakest of all, nearly destroyed several times. Yet its ancestral temple continued to be honored with sacrifices for eight or nine hundred years, and among the Ji surname states it was the last to perish—was this not due to the virtue of Zhao Gong?
