正隆六年，调诸路兵伐宋，及调民马，使彦敬主会宁、蒲与、胡里改三路事。改吏部尚书，充南征万户，迁枢密副使。契丹撒八反，枢密使仆散忽土等以无功坐诛，以彦敬为北面行营都统，与副统纥石烈志宁以便宜往，赐御服皮袄。行至北京，闻南征诸军逃归者皆奔东京，欲推戴世宗。彦敬与志宁谋，阴结会宁尹完颜蒲速赉、利涉军节度使独吉义以图之。
