舒元,鲁国人,孔子二十二世孙,惠帝末避乱江东,元帝引为安东参军,中兴初补中书郎,领太子中庶子,以忤王敦出为广陵相,有《公羊集解》十四卷,《汉魏春秋》九卷。

时有殁在寇贼,失亡尸丧,皆招魂而葬。吾以为出于鄙陋之心,委巷之礼,非圣人之制,而为愚浅所安,遂行于时,王者所宜禁也。何则?圣人制殡葬之意,本以藏形而已,不以安魂为事,故既葬之日,迎神而返,不忍一日离也。况乃招其魂而葬之,反于人情而失其理,虚造斯事以乱圣典,宜可禁也。《通典》一百三十

祭必立坛,不可谓神必墓中也。若神必墓中,则成周雒邑之庙,皆虚设也。又帝丘及《诗》「来格」「聿归」,皆所以明魂无不从耳。既葬三日祭墓,亦犹饭含不忍其虚耳。恭姬之焚,以明穷而弥正,不必灰烬也。就复灰烬,骨肉虽灰,灰则其实;何缘舍埋灰之实而反当葬魂乎!此皆末代失礼之举,非合圣人之旧也。《通典》一百三十

圣人制礼以为经,常人之教,宜备有其文,以别彰其义。即今代父子乖离,不知自处之宜,情至者哀过于有凶,情薄者礼习于无别,此人伦大事,礼所宜明。谓莫测存亡,则名不定,名不定,不可为制。孝子忧危在心,念至则然矣,自然之情,必有降杀,故五服之章,以周月为节。况不闻凶,何得遇之?虽终身不知存亡,无缘更重于三年之丧也,故圣人不别为其制也。通典九十八
