22  | 二十三年，充武英殿总裁。二十四年，命往山东查勘黄河工程。疏称迁民筑堤，成工匪易，惟择要加修两岸堤垫，疏通海口尾闾，为救急治标之策。下其奏，核议施行。 |
| 23 | 十月，出督两广。二十六年，赏用方龙补服。拳匪肇乱，八国联军入京，两宫西狩。诏鸿章入朝，充议和全权大臣，兼督直隶，有「此行为安危存亡所系，勉为其难」之语。鸿章闻警兼程进，先以兵剿畿甸匪，孑身入京，左右前后皆敌军，日与其使臣将帅争盟约，卒定和约十二款。二十七年七月，讲成，相率退军。 |
