《卷四十二列传第二十三　王晏　萧谌　萧坦之　江祏》

永明元年，领步兵校尉，迁侍中祭酒，校尉如故。遭母丧，起为辅国将军、司徒左长史。晏父普曜藉晏势宦，多历通官。晏寻迁左卫将军，加给事中，未拜，而普曜卒，居丧有称。起冠军将军、司徒左长史、济阳太守，未拜，迁卫尉，将军如故。四年，转太子詹事，加散骑常侍。六年，转丹阳尹，常侍如故。晏位任亲重，朝夕进见，言论朝事，自豫章王嶷、尚书令王俭皆降意以接之，而晏每以疏漏被上呵责，连称疾久之。上以晏须禄养，七年，转为江州刺史。晏固辞不愿出外，见许，留为吏部尚书，领太子右卫率。终以旧恩见宠。时王俭虽贵而疏，晏既领选，权行台阁，与俭颇不平。俭卒，礼官议谥，上欲依王导谥为「文献」，晏启上曰：「导乃得此谥，但宋以来，不加素族。」出谓亲人曰：「平头宪事已行矣。」八年，改领右卫将军，陈疾自解。上欲以高宗代晏领选，手敕问之。晏启曰：「鸾清干有馀，然不谙百氏，恐不可居此职。」上乃止。明年，迁侍中，领太子詹事，本州中正，又以疾辞。十年，改授散骑常侍、金紫光禄大夫，给亲信二十人，中正如故。十一年，迁右仆射，领太孙右卫率。
