初，粤西岁饥多盗，湖南雷再浩、新宁李沅发复窜入为乱。粤盗张家福等各率党数千，四出俘劫。秀全乘之，与杨秀清创立保良攻匪会，练兵筹饷，归附者益众。桂平知县诱而执之，搜获入教名册十七本；巡抚郑祖琛不能决，遂释之。秀全既出狱，秀清率众迎归，招集亡命，贵县秦日纲、林凤祥，揭阳海盗罗大纲，衡山洪大全皆来附，有众万人。冯云山读书多智计，为部署队伍、攻守方略。以岁值丁未，应「红羊」之谶，遂乘势倡乱于金田。褫郑祖琛职，起前云贵总督林则徐为钦差大臣往督师。则徐薨于途，以两广总督李星沅代之，赴广西剿寇。寇窜平南恩旺墟，副将李殿元击却之，复回扑，巡检张镛不屈死；仍遁金田，星沅檄清江协副将伊克坦布往攻，被围阵亡。星沅檄镇远总兵周凤岐往援，战一昼夜，毙寇数百，围始解。上以寇势日炽，命前漕运总督周天爵署广西巡抚，乃请提督向荣专剿金田。
