山川大阜在临清州北二里，广百馀里运河自东昌府清平县境北流至临清州城南，贯城而北，卫河自西来会为一，又东北迳夏津、武城、恩县之西，入济南府徳州界，自阳又文官空口铺入府境，北至临清州监店，自兖州府阳谷县至此，长一百七十七里，即元明以来会通河旧道，皆汶水也，是为上河闸凡九，自临清州监店，北至直●呉桥县降民口，长二百二十七里，皆卫水也，是为下河不设闸，今皆谓之运河。《明史河渠志》：正统十三年，河决沙湾，临清告涸，侍郎赵荣则请置减水石坝，以蓄运河之水，四年土壊，运道仍阻，尚书石璞凿河三里以避决口，明年，运河胶浅如故，漕舟俱蚁聚临清上下，都御史徐有贞请置减水闸，开分水河，挑运河，工竣，会通复安 本朝顺治九年，河决安平堤，浸及东昌府城，浸堂邑、博平、临清各堤闸，总河杨方兴塞之。康熙六十年，黄沁并决，修东昌各属堤岸，以卫运河。乾隆三年，修建聊城县房家口进水，唯以泄白家洼滙聚之水入运，又修博平县三教堂成水闸，泄运河之水，由引河入马頬河。十八年，重修聊城县十里铺进水闸，以泄曹州府郓城县西南诸邑之水入运。三十二年，添建临清月河单闸，以泄运河之水入卫，凡皆先事绸缪，相机防䕶，而嵗修之工不与焉，此运河所以深通无滞也。康煕二十八年，圣祖南巡，亲閲运河堤，有御制诗，乾隆三十年。
