刘永澄,字静之,扬州寳应人。八嵗,读正气,歌衣带,赞即立文公位,朝夕拜之,年十九,举于乡,饮酒有妓不往,登万厯辛丑进士第,授顺天学敎授,北方称为淮南夫子,迁国子学正,雷震郊坛先生,上疏灾异求直言:自汉、唐、宋及祖宗,未有改也,往万安刘吉恶人言灾异邹汝愚,一疏,炳烈千古今者,一切报罢,塞谔谔之门,务容容之福,传之史册,尚谓朝廷有人乎满考将迁先生喟然叹曰:阳城为国子师,斥诸生三年不省亲者,况身为国子师乎?」遂归杜门读书,壬子起职,方主事未上而卒,年三十七。先生与东林诸君子为性命之交,高忠宪曰:静之官不过七品,其志以为天下事莫非吾事若何,而圣贤吾君若何而圣贤?吾相若何?而圣贤?吾百司庶职,年不及强仕,而其志以为千古事莫非吾事生前吾者若何扬揭之生当吾者?若何左右之生,后吾者若何矜式之先师?刘忠端曰:静之尚论千古得失。尝曰:古人往矣!岂知千载而下,被静之检㸃,破绽出来,安知千载后又无检㸃静之者?其刻厉自任如此,大概先生天性,过于学问,故其疾恶之严,真如以利刃齿腐朽也,刘静之绪言,今有人焉,矜矜于箪食豆羮之义、木头竹屑之能,至于撄小人之忌,触当世之网,而上闗国是,下闗清议者,则惟恐犯手撩须,百不一发,虽事任在躬,亦不过调停两家,以为持平之体,此其意何为哉?得失之念重耳! 巧宦之法,大率趋承当路,不可稍失其意,虽已之吏胥,亦不肯稍失其意,葢知吏胥亦能操吾之短长也。清夜自思此一种,是何等心事,岂可使人知? 物来顺应,顺者顺乎天理也,非顺乎人情也。 三代而上,黑白自分,是非自明,故曰「王道荡荡,王道平平」。后世以是为非,指醉为醒,倒置已极。君子欲救其弊,不得不矫枉,葢以不平求平,正深于平者也。 有一等自是的人动曰:「吾求信心,不知所信者果本心乎?抑习心乎?」 假善之人,事事可饰,圣贤之迹,只逢著忤,时抗俗的事,便不肯做,不是畏祸,便怕损名其心,总是一团私意故耳,谦谦自牧,由由与偕,在丑不争,临财无茍,此居乡之利也耳!习琐尾之谈,目习徴逐之行,以不分黑白为浑融,以不悖时情为忠厚,此居乡之害也。夫恶人不可为矣,庸人又岂可为乎?恶人不当交矣,庸人又岂足交乎?寻常之人,惯苛责君子而寛贷,小人非君子仇而小人昵也,君子所图者大,则所遗者细,世人只检㸃细处,故多疵耳,小人所逆者理,则所便者情,世人只知较量情分,故多恕耳。 爱人则加诸膝,恶人则陨诸渊,此讥刺语,其实爱恶之道无如此。大学如好好色,如恶恶臭好好色之心,何啻加膝乎?恶恶臭之心,何啻陨渊乎?圣贤只在好恶,前讨分晓,不在好恶时持两端,如虑好恶未必的,当好不敢到十分,好恶不敢到十分,恶则子莫之中,乡愿之善耳。 「与君子交者,君子也。小人交者,小人也。君子可交,小人亦可。交者,乡人也。乡人之好君子也,不甚其恶小人也,亦不甚其用。情在好恶之间,故其立身也,亦在君子、小人之间。天下君子少小,人亦少,而乡人最多,小人害在一身,乡人害在风俗。 李卓吾曰:有利于己,而欲时时嘱托公事,则称引万物,一体之说,有害于己,而欲逺怨避嫌,则称引明哲保身之说,使君相烛其奸,不许嘱托,不许逺嫌避害,又不许称引,则道学之情穷矣! 如爱己之心,爱人先儒,必归之穷理正心,如治己之心,而治人先儒必以强于自治为本。葢未能穷理正心,则吾之爱恶取舍未必得正,而推己及物亦必不得其当。然未能强于自治,则是以不正之身为标的,将使天下之人皆如吾之不正而沦胥以陷。 说心说性说元说妙总是口头禅只把孟子集义二字,较勘身心,一日之内,一事之间,有多少不合义,处有多少不慊于心处,事事检㸃,不义之端,渐渐难入,而天理之本体渐渐归复,浩然之气不充于天地之间者鲜矣。学正薛元台,先生敷敎。
