丁未,上初欲用王安石为参知政事,曾公亮因荐之,参知政事唐介曰:「安石恐难大任。」上曰:「卿谓文学为不可任耶?经术不可任耶?吏事不可任耶?」介曰:「非谓此也。安石好学而泥古,议论迂阔,若使为政,恐多所变更,必扰天下。」退至中书,谓公亮等曰:「今日安石之言果用,天下困扰,诸公当自知之耳!」时执政进除目,上久之不决,既数日,乃曰:「朕问王安石以为然,可即施行。」介曰:「陛下比择大臣付以天下之事,此中书小小迁除,陛下尚未以信,虽广询博访,亦宜谨密。今明白如此,使中书政事决可否于翰林学士。臣近每闻陛下宣谕某某事问安石,以为可即施行,某某事以为不可未得施行,如此则执政何所用?必以臣为不才,当先罢免,此语传之天下,恐非信任体也。」安石既执政,奏言:「中书处分事用札子,皆言奉旨,不中理者常十八九,不若令中书自出牒,不必称圣旨。」上愕然。介曰:「太宗时寇准用札子迁冯拯等官不当,拯诉之,太宗曰:『前代中书有堂牒指挥事,乃权臣藉此以威福天下。太祖朝赵普为相,堂牒重于敕命,寻令削去。今复置札子,何异堂牒?』张洎因言:『札子乃中书行遣小事,若废之,则别无公式』太宗曰:『大事则降敕,其当用札子,亦须奏裁。』此所以称圣旨也。今安石不欲称圣旨,则是政不自天子出也,使执政皆忠贤,犹为人臣擅命,义亦难安,或非其人,岂不害政?」上曰:「太宗制置此事极当。」案:札子卒从王安石,故绍圣间章敦乃以藉口。 及安石议谋杀人伤者许首,案:事见元年。介数与安石争论于上前,介曰:「此法天下皆以为不可首,独曾公亮、王安石以为可首。」安石曰:「以为不可首者皆朋党耳。」安石强辨,上主其语。介不胜愤闷,居顷之,疽发背而卒。《纪事本末》卷五十九。案:《续宋编年资治通鉴》:唐介薨,上临其丧,谥曰质肃。《编年备要》云:介疾,上临问,为之出涕,至是躬临其丧。徐乾学《通鉴后编》云:介病亟,帝临问流涕,既卒,幸其第哭,以画像不类,取禁旧藏本赐其家。盖介为谏议大夫时,仁宗密令图其像,置温成阁中,御题曰「右正言唐介」,外廷不知也,至是人始知之。时安石锐意变更,帝信任益专,介既死,同列无一人敢与之抗者。曾公亮屡请老,富弼称疾不视事,赵拚力不胜,遇一事变,更称苦者数十,故当时谓「中书有生老病死苦」,盖言安石生,公亮老,富弼病,唐介死,赵拚苦也。
