| 19 | 熊绣，字汝明，道州人。成化二年进士。为御史，坐事谪清丰知县。累官都御史，巡抚延绥。操励洁亷，自甘蔬布，饩廪有羡，不入私室。忧边练武套，众三年不大入。塞忧去。家拜兵部右侍郎，升两广右都御史。逾年召入南台。正德三年，中官李荣忽传旨熊绣致仕，即屏居山中，断绝书问生事萧条，俯仰益恬适。卒，巡抚秦金为请于朝，赠南刑部尚书。明年，太仆少卿何孟春上疏曰：「窃见致仕故都御史熊绣，事母孝，事兄友居贵，贫居常俭，扬厯中外四十馀年，守法狥公，推贤嫉恶，不邀时誉，不急近功。言无爽于属垣，行弗亏于顾影。往年都御史戴珊、张敷华卒，其门生属吏子孙咸请易名主事。张凤翔、孔琦卒，乡人请恤其家。圣朝表劝清贤不吝恩，霈绣才节，操履无让，珊等赐谥恤孤，惟宸衷，轸允幸甚」。诏给绣继子子端米月一石，谥庄简。 论曰：学士先生之于世也，虽静躁殊轨，取舍异途，然大约可知矣。道岩穴者绌朝市甘，富贵者羞沉沦，孔子曰：「道不同，不相为谋信哉。夫不宾之士，绝尘高蹈，蝉蜕于尘埃，彼其视世若垢也，故踚然而自清。虽失其中行，然志意足高矣。至于贵显廊庙，邈焉山林之思，则将浮沉淟涊，局促寰区营营与利驰逐也，顾身没而名不扬。谚曰：「注瓦者工，注金者蒙」。何者？得失愈厚，则内视益眩也。世之缙绅乐仕者，亦往往雅志山林，至命以自谓然，矫易去就，则相违逺矣，岂所谓道不同者非耶？古之哲人，行泥而乘云，身处烦嚣之中，神驰钊旷之域，豹隐龙翔，凤览蠖屈，得时则行，知难则退，翩翩居贞，其于富贵岩穴无有也。故能揆道豫虑，抗志洁身，垂休而誉无斁矣，若熊公者，非其人哉！ |
