毕自严字景曾，淄川人。万歴壬辰进士，授松江推官。年少有能名，升刑部主事，歴任至布政使，所在咸有政绩。泰昌改元，擢太仆卿。逾月，以佥都御史防海，巡抚天津，招练水陆军六万人，安插客兵万人，马舰甲仗称是。经年，仅费县官钱七万。莲教于宏志围景州，自严亟，会兵剿平之。晋户部侍郎移疾归。崇祯初，起户部尚书。时京师戒严，自严刍糈立办，中外恃以无恐。在部六年，晋太子太保致仕，卒。赠少保，赐祭𦵏，䕃一子。
