留正，字仲至，晋江人，从效六世孙，第进士。孝宗朝，除给事中，兼权吏部尚书。甞言用人莫先论相望，精选人才，与图大计，时相不乐，除绍兴府，后为四川制置使、知成都府，以简素化民，召除执政，孝宗宻谕内禅意，拜右丞相。光宗立，姜特立声势浸盛，奏黜之。绍兴改元，进左丞相，谨法度，惜名器，毫发不可干以私，引用赵汝愚、黄裳诸贤，疏乞建储，不报。孝宗疾笃，数请光宗过宫正，引裾泣谏。孝宗崩，光宗以疾未能执丧，率同列乞早正嘉王储位，不报。即出国门上表请老，宁宗立，遣使召还。未几，以少师、观文殿大学士判建康府。嘉泰初，复元官，进封魏国公。卒，赠太师，諡忠宣。
