先是，王、李之学盛行，袁氏兄弟独心非之。宗道在馆中，与同馆黄辉力排其说。于唐好白乐天，于宋好苏轼，名其斋曰白苏。至宏道，益矫以清新轻俊，学者多舍王、李而从之，目为公安体。然戏谑嘲笑，间杂俚语，空疏者便之。其后，王、李风渐息，而钟、谭之说大炽。钟、谭者，钟惺、谭元春也。

自宏道矫王、李诗之弊，倡以清真，惺复矫其弊，变而为幽深孤峭。与同里谭元春评选唐人之诗为《唐诗归》，又评选隋以前诗为《古诗归》。钟、谭之名满天下，谓之竟陵体。然两人学不甚富，其识解多僻，大为通人所讥。元春，字友夏，名辈后于惺，以《诗归》故，与齐名。至天启七年始举乡试第一，惺已前卒矣。
