三月辛未朔，翰林学士欧阳修兼侍读学士。修言：『侍读最为清近，祖宗时不过一两人。今与经筵者十四人而侍读十人，外议皆云「经筵无坐处矣。」欲乞罢臣此命，不使朝廷遴选之清职，遂同列授之冗员。』诏不许。修固辞不拜。修又言：『切以学士、待制号为侍从之臣，所以承宴间，备顾问，以论思献纳为职。自祖宗以来，尤所精择。其后员数渐多。往时学士、待制至六七十员，近年稍吝除拜，今犹及四十馀员。欲乞检详前史及国朝故事，自观文殿大学士至待制，并各立员数，苟无其人，虚位以待。』己卯，起居舍人范镇知制诰。镇自罢言职，每因事，未尝不以储嗣为言，冀上心感动。及知制诰正谢，又面论之曰：『陛下许臣复三年矣，愿早定大计。』
