七月戊戌，起居舍人袁甫奏：『并命二相，所当尽心，上副委任之意。今中外多事，而左相辞逊，右相畏避，各事形迹，缓急若何?乞宣谕二相，力行一个公字。』上曰：『卿议论极当。』甲辰，秘书郎兼庄文太子府教授应繇奏建储事，上曰：『此事祖宗自有典故。』繇奏：『仁宗晚年，因大臣有请，方能为此。高宗春秋鼎盛，未诞皇嗣，乃能以天下为公，选宗室子育之禁中，真度越千古。』上曰：『朕今见欲推择。』读至『宫中保护，关系非轻，始高宗定此议，富直柔奏：须是宫中有任责者方可。高宗圣谕已有区处，是时刘贤妃为婕妤』，上曰：『宪圣慈烈皇后为才人。』又奏：『陛下既知之，必有以处。此保护一节，关系非小，愿留圣虑。』上然之。己酉，臣寮奏：『乞明诏大臣，同心协力，事须执奏审处，其当而行，上不至有反汗之嫌，下不见有过举之迹。更愿陛下推心以待丞弼，宽虑以图治功。』从之。
