夏四月辛巳，右仆射吕公著为司空、同平章军国事，仍一月三赴经筵，二日一朝，因至都堂议事；吕大防为左仆射，范纯仁为右仆射兼中书侍郎。制词，学士苏轼所草也。是夕，轼对于内东门小殿，既承旨。太皇太后忽宣谕轼曰：『内翰何以至此?』轼曰：『遭遇陛下。』曰：『不关老身事，亦不关官家事，此是神宗皇帝之意。当其饮食而停箸看文字，则内人必曰：「此苏轼文字也。」神宗忽时称曰：「奇才，奇才!」但未及用学士而上仙尔。』轼哭失声，太皇太后与上左右皆泣，已而命坐赐茶，曰：『内翰直须尽心事官家，以报先帝知遇。』轼拜而出，撤金莲烛送归院。壬午，孙固守门下侍郎，刘挚守中书侍郎，王存守尚书左丞，安焘为右光禄大夫、依前知枢密院事，胡宗愈为中大夫、守尚书右丞，赵瞻为枢密直学士、签书枢密院事。甲申，韩川、刘安世进对，太皇太后问：『近日差除如何?』安世等曰：『朝廷用人皆协舆望，惟胡宗愈，公议以为未允耳。』癸丑，范祖禹言：『臣不侍经席已逾两月。昔唐宪宗不对学士两月，李绛奏曰：「为臣等窃禄偷安之计则便矣，其如陛下何?」陛下如好学，则天下之君子皆欣慕，愿立于朝，以直道事陛下，辅助德业而致太平矣。陛下如不好学，则天下之小人皆动其心，欲立于朝，以邪谄事陛下，窃取富贵而专权利矣。』
