八月癸巳，权礼部侍郎沈该乞四川类省试合格不赴殿试人，第一等并赐进士出身，馀人同出身，从之。自行在、吴中蜀士不就廷试，榜首率依第三人推恩，讲和后稍稍来奉大对。是举类试策问古今蜀人材盛衰之故，而德阳何耕对策，极论蜀士徇道守节，无心于世，引楚相子文三仕三已之说为证。又言：『李固无大雅之明哲，卒犯于跋扈将军之手，议者固已少之。若相如作《封禅书》，盖孟子所谓逢君之恶。扬子云作《美新》以媚贼，又蜀人所羞道。』有司定为榜首。秦桧见其州里，大恶之，曰：『是敢与张德远为地邪！』丙申，签书枢密院事汪勃提举江州太平兴国宫。丁酉，工部尚书詹大方签书枢密院事，寻权参知政事。戊戌，知郢州赵叔法代还，言：『陛下登用耆德，专任一相，坐致丕平。望以今日得人专任之效宣付史馆。』癸丑，进呈。上顾秦桧曰：『此卿之功也。朕记卿初自敌中归，尝对朕言：「如欲天下无事，须是南自南，北自北。」遂首建讲和之议，朕心固已判然，而梗于众论，久而方决。今南北罢兵六年矣，天下无事，果如卿言。』
