匡衡字稚圭，东海承人也。师古曰：「承音证。」父世农夫，至衡好学，家贫，庸作以供资用，师古曰：「庸作，言卖功庸为人作役而受顾也。」尤精力过绝人。诸儒为之语曰：「无说诗，匡鼎来；服虔曰：「鼎犹言当也，若言匡且来也。」应劭曰：「鼎，方也。」张晏曰：「匡衡少时字鼎，长乃易字稚圭。世所传衡与贡禹书，上言『衡敬报』，下言『匡鼎白』，知是字也。」师古曰：「服、应二说是也。贾谊曰『天子春秋鼎盛』，其义亦同，而张氏之说盖穿凿矣。假有其书，乃是后人见此传云『匡鼎来』，不晓其意，妄作衡书云『鼎白』耳。字以表德，岂人之所自称乎？今有西京杂记者，其书浅俗，出于里巷，多有妄说，乃云匡衡小名鼎，盖绝知者之听。」匡说诗，解人颐。」如淳曰：「使人笑不能止也。」
