王廷陈字稚钦，黄冈人。少为文，顷刻便就，多奇气，然好狎游黏竿、风鸱诸童子乐。又蹶不可驯，父每手失扑之，辄呼曰：「大人奈何辄虐海内名士耶？」为翰林庶吉士，诗已有名，其意不可一世，仅推何景明，而好薛蕙、郑善夫。故事，学士二人为庶吉士师，甚严重，稚钦独心易之。时登院署中树而窥学士过，故作声惊使见大恚，然度无如何，徉为不知也，乃已。尝授官给事中，用言事故，诏特予外补裕州守。既中不屑州而以诛出，知当召，益骄甚。台省监司过州，不出迎，亦无所托疾，人或劝之，怒曰：「龌龊诸盲官，受廷陈迎耶？当不愧死？」一日，出候其师蔡潮以他藩道者，潮好谓曰：「生来候我固厚，而分守从后来，亦一见否？且生厚我，以师故，即分守，君命也。」稚钦曰：「善」。乃前迎分守，而分守既下车，数州吏微过，当稚钦笞之十，稚钦大骂曰：「蔡师误王先生见辱。」挺身出，悉呼其吏卒从守勿更侍，一府中心谭，亡敢留者。分守窘不能具朝埽谋于蔡潮，潮为谢过，稍给之，仅得夜引去。于是监司相戒，莫敢道裕州，而恨稚钦益甚。为文致逮下狱，削秩归。家居，愈益自放，达官贵人来购文好见者，稚钦多蓬首垢足，囚服应之。间衣红苎窄衫跨马，或骑牛啸歌田野间，人多望而避者。
