17  | 《隋志》称婆罗门书，以十四字贯一切音，文省义广，盖天竺以声为字。《盘涅经》有二十五字母，《华严经》有四十字母。今《通志?七音略》所传天竺三十六字母，所变化各书，犹可见也。唐古忒之书，出于天竺元世祖中统元年，命国师八思巴制蒙古新字千馀，母四十一，皆相关纽，则采唐古忒与天竺为之，亦迦虑之变相也。我朝达文成公，又采唐古忒蒙古之字，变化而成国书，至乾隆时，于是制成清篆，亦以声而演形，并托音为字者。然印度之先，亦必以象形为字，未必能遽合声为字，其合声为字，必其后起也。辽太祖神册五年，增损隶书之半，制契丹文字。金太祖命完颜希尹依效楷书，因契丹字合本国语为国书。西夏李元昊命野利仁荣演书，成十二卷，体类八分，此则本原于形，非自然而变者。本无精义自立，故国亡而书随之也。 |
