先是，帝寝疾，不食者半月，外庭忧危时皇太子未得见，给事中杨涟偕诸给事、御史走谒方从哲。御史左光斗趣从哲问安从哲曰：「帝讳疾，即问左右不敢传」。涟曰：「昔文潞公问宋仁宗疾，内侍不肯言。潞公曰：天子起居，汝曹不令宰相知，将毋有他志，速下中书行法。公诚日三问不必见，亦不必上知，第令宫中知廷臣在事自济，公更当宿阁中。从哲曰：无故事。涟曰：潞公不诃史志聪，此何时尚问故事耶？越二日，从哲始率廷臣入问，及帝疾亟，太子尚踌躇宫门外，涟与光斗遣人语东宫伴读，王安曰：帝疾甚，不召太子，非帝意，当力请入侍，尝药侍膳，薄暮始还」。太子深纳之。杨琏，字文孺，应山人。左光斗，字遗直，桐城人，王安雄县人至是大渐，召英国公张惟贤辅七世孙大贤士方从哲、尚书周嘉谟字明卿，汉川人、李汝华字茂夫，睢州人、黄嘉善、张问达、黄克缵字绍夫，晋江人、侍郎孙如游字景文，馀姚人等于𢎞徳殿，勉诸臣勤职，辅理嗣君。越二日崩，遗诏发帑金百万充边赏，罢一切矿税及监税中官，起用建言得罪诸臣。
