六月，以张璁、桂蕚为翰林学士，方献夫为侍讲学士。是年春，蕚疏既上，廷臣方具议，璁复言今日之礼不在皇与不皇，而在考与不考。蕚又具第二疏如璁指，且言：陛下承祖宗大统执政，乃无故任，已私为不道，使陛下终身为无父人逆伦。悖义若此，犹可使与斯议哉？」二人疏同上，帝大喜，立召赴京。初，议礼诸臣无力诋执政者，至蕚遂斥为不道，且欲不使舆议，其言恣肆无忌，朝士无疾之。既而献帝已追尊本生皇考，阁臣请停召命，帝不得已从之。二人已在道，意大沮丧，乃复合疏请与礼官而质，且云：「本生对所后而言，若不亟去此二字，则虽称皇考，寔与皇叔无异。疏入，帝复召二人，比至都，衆汹汹，欲仿先朝马顺故事，毙之于廷蕚，惧不敢出。璁越数日始朝，恐有伺者出东华门，走匿武定侯郭勋家，勋大喜，纳为内助。时给事中张翀等连劾璁、蕚及方献夫席书诸人，章下所司。翀彚送刑部尚书。赵鉴即列璁等罪状上请私相语曰：「倘得俞㫖，便𢷏杀之」。帝亷知之，特命璁、蕚为学士。献夫为侍读学士，切责翀。鉴学士丰熙修撰舒芬、杨慎、张衍庆，编修王思等，皆不愿与璁、蕚同列，乞罢归，帝怒，俱夺俸。璁、蕚以议礼骤贵，于是闲罢失职，武夫小吏皆望风希㫖，抗论庙谟矣。质实，郭勋，武定侯英六世孙。张翀字习之，潼川人。丰熙，字原学，鄞人。杨慎，字用修，廷和子。张衍，庆汲县人。秋七月，罢吏部尚书乔字。
