68  | 文宗太和元年四月丙辰，宰臣等于延英既出，再召韦处厚，独对一刻馀。时宰臣启事得请之后，往往中变。是日，处厚与裴度、窦易直同对，既而从容独进曰「陛下用臣等为宰相，使参大政，前后论奏，皆蒙听纳。近日虽云不阻，然臣等既退，寻多改移，事若出自圣旨，则是陛下示臣等以不信。若与别人商量，则臣等不合更居此位。且裴度以元勋旧德，历相四朝，孜孜竭诚，人望所属，陛下固宜亲重易直，以忠厚长者辅佐先帝，陛下亦当委付微臣，是陛下首自选擢，非因陈乞」帝瞿然曰「卿何事邪，卿何事邪？朕知卿合作宰相，一昨内难既定，朕以人望所属，用卿不疑，军国事多，方所倚赖。今卿辞免，是彰朕之不德，朝廷四方，其谓朕何」慰勉久之而退。既出延英门，遽命中人复召处厚，独入咨访移晷，开陈理体者数百言，其要以旌别淑慝、修举法制为请。因复恳言裴度勋大望崇，且其心忠荩，可以久于任使，帝欣纳焉。 |
