居正父卒，帝与两宫遣中使慰问，络绎道路，然未尝有意留之，而居正自以握权久，恐一旦去他人，且谋已，㑹户部侍郎李幼孜应城人欲媚居正首，倡夺情议，冯保亦不欲居正去，中旨令吏部尚书张瀚谕留居正，居正乃阳上书请守制，而阴以牍风瀚覆㫖，瀚谬为不喻，谓：「政府奔丧，宜予殊典，礼部事也，何闗吏部？」居正复令客说之，不为动，乃传旨责瀚久不奉诏，无人臣礼，勒致仕，瀚先附居正，得掌吏部，见非于世，至是忤之去，士论皆重瀚。于是请留者相继编修。呉中行检讨赵用贤字汝师，常熟人上疏争之。已而员外郎艾穆字和父，平江人。主事沈思孝字纯父，秀水人亦合疏言「居正贪位忘亲。居正大怒，谋于冯保，欲廷杖之。学士王锡爵字元驭，太仓人等求解于居正，不得，锡爵独造丧次，切言之。居正勃窣下，拜索刀作刎颈状曰：尔杀我，尔杀我！」径入不顾。侍讲于慎行、字无垢，东阿人。田一㒞字徳万，大田人张位、赵志臯字汝迈，兰溪人修撰习孔教庐陵人沈懋学字君典，宣城人。皆疏救，格不入，遂杖中行等四人，谪戌进士邹元标，字尔瞻，吉水人。复上疏争，亦坐杖戍南京。御史朱鸿模字文甫，益都人。驰疏救中行等五人，并斥为民。于是锡爵慎行一㒞。懋学先后移病归，诏遣居正子编修嗣修与司礼太监魏朝驰传往代司丧，礼部主事唐诘治祭，工部主事徐应聘治丧。居正请无造朝以青衣、素服、角带入阁治事，许之。
