昔帝鸿氏有不才子，In ancient days the Emperor Hong (Huangdi) had a son devoid of ability,
掩义隐贼，who shut himself off from duty, and was a villain in secret,
好行凶慝， delighting in the practice of the worst vices,
天下谓之浑沌。 and all men called him Hundun (Chaos).
少暤氏有不才子，毁信恶忠，崇饰恶言，天下谓之穷奇。(The Emperor) Shaohao had a descendant devoid of ability, who overthrew good faith, hated loyalty, extolled specious and evil talk, and all the people called him Qiongji (Monster).
颛顼氏有不才子， Zhuanxu had a son devoid of ability,
不可教训，who would receive no instruction
不知话言， and acknowledge no good words,
天下谓之梼杌。 and all the people called him Taowu (Block).
此三族世忧之。These three men everyone was distressed
至于尧， about until the time of Yao,
尧未能去。 but Yao could not send them away.
缙云氏有不才子， Jinyun had a son devoid of ability,
贪于饮食， who was greedy in eating and drinking,
冒于货贿， and pursued wealth blindly.
天下谓之饕餮。 All the people called him Taotie (Glutton),
天下恶之，比之三凶。 hated and compared him to the three other wicked men.
舜宾于四门， Shun received visitors at the four gates,
乃流四凶族，but banished these four wicked ones
迁于四裔，to the four borders of the empire
以御螭魅， to manage hobgoblins;
于是四门辟，and those at the four gates
言毋凶人也。 rightly said there were no wicked men among them.
