古人庸行之事莫非至理,作聖作賢,由此為之。世人不能為聖賢,皆庸行不求如禮,不克顧名思義,斯咫尺千里,白首窮年,無分毫之益也。容貌詞氣,所謂物之則、事之義也。留心於此,謂之窮理。踐履及此,謂之行義。言必聞表著之位,視不過襘之中,所以管攝其心,使有所措,不外馳也。朝祭服之有旒纊,非真蒙耳目使不聞見,所以去人心雜念也。履之有絇,尊之有禁,非謂見此二物遂不行不飲,所以教人知節,不至淫放。上服有冠有笏,下輻必正如帷,義取整齊嚴肅。深思其制,以防非僻之心,非可以燕居之服假借用也。祭器亦然,不施于用器,敬其事者,必以日之朝氣為之。以月計者則在朔,以歲計者則在春也。奉身之具,不必薄於人,不必厚于人,以隨才稱等為得。厚薄之宜,得其宜則義也。古之君子御家以四教,勤、儉、恭、恕。正家以四禮,冠、婚、喪、祭。飲食俎豆之數,衣服采章之別,器角精粗之等,尊者取贏焉,卑者取約焉。所行之事即有供事之物。既用其物,即有象物之容。垣屋什器,必堅朴勿苟費也。門巷果木,必方列勿苟亂也。饗食無加物,及禮可矣。太史公曰,布衣匹夫之人,不害于政,不妨百姓,取與以時而息財富,智者有取焉。用物太侈,必有窮時。至于既窮,如人之沒水,不可振也。侈糜之生淫僻,猶饑寒之趨姦邪。故小人不勝情欲,必陷罪辜。雖居高上之位,行快心之事,未可為福也。古者執贄相見,有敘情配志二義。故曰視其所贄而知其所任焉,非因以求貨也。凡致禮于人者,二事並施,各遣一使以致詞,所以達誠一。一使兼二事非禮,一人兼二使亦非禮也。達尊之前,禮恭而言直。以道相嚮,不崇其齒而枉焉,益所以尊長者也。不恭戴則失長幼之節,不直則害義禮之正,皆浮薄之行也。主人待客,必敬而禮之。不問算卑長幼,皆當敬之也。客過主人,亦必以禮自處,不問造次顛沛,皆不可廢禮也。朝聘必受於廟,詞必稱先君,以相接至境必假塗。昔貴今賤者,待之不損吾異日,皆行禮之事也。易曰,嘉會足以合禮,禮不可獨行,當與在會之人同服行之。故君子有會聚之事,必以講禮為先。會不以禮,必有豖酒獄訟之爭,有攘臂詬誶之隙,有忌克譎詭之心,豈嘉會之謂乎?凡久而漸靡,與之俱化者,眾人之心常放也。兢兢自檢,不知其然而然者,聖人之心常存也。不潔之事,名猶遠之,況其實乎?不正之迹,形猶惡之,況其真乎?常以行禮為心,自不犯非義矣。若夫富貴貧賤之交,最難把持,故聖賢每于此致力。吾徒行年既久,觀事頗多,今之所遭,後之所忘,何不可以釋然?此之所欣,彼之所厭,何者謂之確然?不惟苟且求得不可為,即無心任運亦非正要,當用力貞勝,然後見學問有權也。夫自勝為彊,如龍之不見石;遇物而靡,如魚之觸餌。勢牽於人,道窮於我,愈求脫則愈束縛,翳桑之餓人,恥行乞而羞自致,所以能成其剛也。世亂無家,不容不依故人之有位者,當以蔡茂依竇融為法,署官則固辭,每所餉給,計口取足而已。故並記之。
