(The empty heart, or the Dao in its operation)
孔德之容，The grandest forms of active force
唯道是从。From Dao come, their only source.
道之为物，Who can of Dao the nature tell?
唯恍唯惚。Our sight it flies, our touch as well.
忽兮恍兮，Eluding sight, eluding touch,
其中有象；The forms of things all in it crouch;
恍兮忽兮，Eluding touch, eluding sight,
其中有物。There are their semblances, all right.
窈兮冥兮，Profound it is, dark and obscure;
其中有精；Things' essences all there endure.
其精甚真，Those essences the truth enfold
其中有信。Of what, when seen, shall then be told.
自古及今，Now it is so; 'twas so of old.
其名不去，Its name - what passes not away;
以阅衆甫。So, in their beautiful array, Things form and never know decay.
吾何以知衆甫之状哉？How know I that it is so with all the beauties of existing things?
以此。By this (nature of the Dao).
