南郭子綦隐几而坐，Nan-Guo Zi-Qi was seated, leaning forward on his stool.
仰天而嘘， He was looking up to heaven and breathed gently,
嗒焉似丧其耦。seeming to be in a trance, and to have lost all consciousness of any companion.
颜成子游立侍乎前，(His disciple), Yan Cheng Zi-You, who was in attendance and standing before him,
曰： said,
“何居乎？ 'What is this?
形固可使如槁木， Can the body be made to become thus like a withered tree,
而心固可使如死灰乎？ and the mind to become like slaked lime?
今之隐几者，His appearance as he leans forward on the stool to-day
非昔之隐几者也。” is such as I never saw him have before in the same position.'
子綦曰： Zi-Qi said,
“偃， 'Yan,
不亦善乎而问之也！ you do well to ask such a question,
今者吾丧我， I had just now lost myself;
汝知之乎？ but how should you understand it?
女闻人籁而未闻地籁，You may have heard the notes of Man, but have not heard those of Earth;
女闻地籁而未闻天籁夫！”you may have heard the notes of Earth, but have not heard those of Heaven.'
子游曰：“敢问其方。”Zi-You said, 'I venture to ask from you a description of all these.'
子綦曰：“夫大块噫气，其名为风。The reply was, 'When the breath of the Great Mass (of nature) comes strongly, it is called Wind.
是唯无作， Sometimes it does not come so;
作则万窍怒呺。but when it does, then from a myriad apertures there issues its excited noise;
而独不闻之翏翏乎？ have you not heard it in a prolonged gale?
山林之畏佳， Take the projecting bluff of a mountain forest - in the great trees,
大木百围之窍穴，a hundred spans round, the apertures and cavities
似鼻， are like the nostrils,
似口， or the mouth,
似耳， or the ears;
似枅， now square,
似圈，now round like a cup
似臼， or a mortar;
似洼者， here like a wet footprint,
似污者； and there like a large puddle.
激者， (The sounds issuing from them are like) those of fretted water,
謞者， of the arrowy whizz,
叱者， of the stern command,
吸者， of the inhaling of the breath,
叫者， of the shout,
譹者， of the gruff note,
宎者， of the deep wail,
咬者， of the sad and piping note.
前者唱于而随者唱喁。The first notes are slight, and those that follow deeper, but in harmony with them.
泠风则小和， Gentle winds produce a small response;
飘风则大和， violent winds a great one.
厉风济则众窍为虚。When the fierce gusts have passed away, all the apertures are empty
而独不见之调调、之刁刁乎？” (and still) - have you not seen this in the bending and quivering of the branches and leaves?'
子游曰：Zi-You said,
“地籁则众窍是已， 'The notes of Earth then are simply those which come from its myriad apertures;
人籁则比竹是已。and the notes of Man may just be compared to those which (are brought from the tubes of) bamboo
敢问天籁。”- allow me to ask about the notes of Heaven.'
子綦曰： Zi-Qi replied,
“夫吹万不同， 'Blowing the myriad differences,
而使其自已1也， making them stop [proceed] of themselves,
咸其自取，sealing their self-selecting
怒者其谁邪！” - who is it that stirs it all up?'
