儒家 -> 孟子 -> 梁惠王上 -> 2.2

孟子对曰：Mencius replied,
“贤者而后乐此，'Being wise and good, they have pleasure in these things.
不贤者虽有此，If they are not wise and good, though they have these things,
不乐也。they do not find pleasure.
《诗》云：It is said in the Book of Poetry,
‘经始灵台，"He measured out and commenced his marvellous tower;
经之营之，He measured it out and planned it.
庶民攻之，The people addressed themselves to it,
不日成之。And in less than a day completed it.
经始勿亟，When he measured and began it, he said to them - Be not so earnest:
庶民子来。But the multitudes came as if they had been his children.
王在灵囿，The king was in his marvellous park;
麀鹿攸伏，The does reposed about,
麀鹿濯濯，The does so sleek and fat:
白鸟鹤鹤。And the white birds came glistening.
王在灵沼，The king was by his marvellous pond;
于牣鱼跃。’How full was it of fishes leaping about!"
文王以民力为台为沼。King Wen used the strength of the people to make his tower and his pond,
而民欢乐之，and yet the people rejoiced to do the work,
谓其台曰灵台，calling the tower "the marvellous tower,"
谓其沼曰灵沼，calling the pond "the marvellous pond,"
乐其有麋鹿鱼鼈。and rejoicing that he had his large deer, his fishes, and turtles.
古之人与民偕乐， The ancients caused the people to have pleasure as well as themselves,
故能乐也。 and therefore they could enjoy it.
《汤誓》曰：In the Declaration of Tang it is said,
‘时日害丧？"O sun, when wilt thou expire?
予及女偕亡。’We will die together with thee."
民欲与之偕亡，The people wished for Jie's death, though they should die with him.
虽有台池鸟兽，Although he had towers, ponds, birds, and animals,
岂能独乐哉？”how could he have pleasure alone?'
