子舆与子桑友，Zi-yu and Zi-sang were friends.
而霖雨十日。(Once), when it had rained continuously for ten days,
子舆曰： Zi-yu said,
“子桑殆病矣！” 'I fear that Zi-sang may be in distress.'
裹饭而往食之。So he wrapped up some rice, and went to give it to him to eat.
至子桑之门， When he came to Zi-sang's door,
则若歌若哭， there issued from it sounds between singing and wailing;
鼓琴曰：a lute was struck, and there came the words,
“父邪母邪！'0 Father! 0 Mother!
天乎人乎！”0 Heaven! 0 Men!'
有不任其声， The voice could not sustain itself,
而趋举其诗焉。 and the line was hurriedly pronounced.
子舆入，曰： Zi-yu entered and said,
“子之歌诗，何故若是？”'Why are you singing, Sir, this line of poetry in such a way?'
曰：“吾思乎使我至此极者而弗得也。The other replied, 'I was thinking, and thinking in vain, how it was that I was brought to such extremity.
父母岂欲吾贫哉？Would my parents have wished me to be so poor?
天无私覆， Heaven overspreads all without any partial feeling,
地无私载， and so does Earth sustain all;
天地岂私贫我哉？ Would Heaven and Earth make me so poor with any unkindly feeling?
求其为之者而不得也。I was trying to find out who had done it, and I could not do so.
然而至此极者， But here I am in this extremity
命也夫！”- it is what was appointed for me!'
