Dong Zhuo, courtesy name Zhongying, was a native of Lin Tao, Long Xi. He had a coarse and fierce nature but was also cunning and strategic. As a young man, he once traveled in the Qiang region and formed close ties with all the chieftains there. Later, when he returned to farm in the countryside, some of the chieftains came to visit him. Dong Zhuo slaughtered his oxen for them and hosted banquets with entertainment; moved by his sincerity, the chieftains gathered together and gave him more than a thousand miscellaneous livestock as a gift. Thus, he became well known for his strength and 侠义 (chivalry). He served as a military clerk in the state government and often patrolled and guarded the frontier. Dong Zhuo had extraordinary physical strength; he could wear two quivers at once, riding and shooting with both hands, which made the Qiang and Hu tribes fear him.

In the later years of Emperor Huan, he was appointed as a Youlin Lang because he came from an esteemed family in one of the six commanderies. He followed Zhonglangjiang Zhang Huan as a military commander and participated in suppressing the rebellious Qiang people in Hanyang, achieving victory. For this, he was conferred the title of Langzhong and awarded nine thousand bolts of silk. Dong Zhuo said: "He who acts is I; he who possesses is the scholar." He then distributed all of it among his officers and soldiers, keeping nothing for himself. He was gradually promoted to the position of Weiji Jiaowei in the Western Regions but was later dismissed from office due to some misconduct. Later, he served as Cishi (governor) of Bingzhou and Taishou (prefect) of Hedong.

In the first year of Zhongping, he was appointed Dongzhonglangjiang and given a symbol of authority to replace Lu Zhi in attacking Zhang Jiao at Xia Quyang. However, his army suffered defeat, and he was held accountable for it. That winter, the Xianling Qiang of Beidi and a group of bandits from Fuhuan He Guan rebelled. They jointly appointed Hu Bei Gong Boyu and Li Wenhao, who were Yicong tribesmen from Huangzhong, as generals and killed Huqiang Jiaowei Ling Zheng. Bei Gong Boyu and others then captured Bian Zhang and Han Sui, natives of Jincheng, and entrusted them with exclusive authority over military affairs. Together they killed Taishou Chen Yi of Jincheng and launched attacks and burned down state and commandery offices. The following spring, they led tens of thousands of cavalry to invade the Three Fu regions and approached the imperial mausoleums under the pretense of waging a campaign against eunuchs. An edict was issued appointing Dong Zhuo as Zhonglangjiang, serving as deputy to Zu Cheqi Jiangjun Huangfu Song in suppressing the rebellion. Huangfu Song was dismissed and returned home for failing to achieve results, while Bian Zhang, Han Sui, and others grew significantly stronger. The imperial court then appointed Sikong Zhang Wen as Cheqi Jiangjun, granting him a symbol of authority, and made Yiping Yuan Pang his deputy. Dong Zhuo was conferred the title Pulu Jiangjun and placed under Zhang Wen together with Dangkou Jiangjun Zhou Shen. Combined forces from various commanderies, including infantry and cavalry, totaled more than 100,000 troops, who were stationed in Meiyang to protect the imperial mausoleums. Bian Zhang and Han Sui also advanced their forces toward Meiyang. Zhang Wen and Dong Zhuo engaged in battle with them, but were repeatedly defeated. In the eleventh month, at night there was a shooting star like fire, its light stretching more than ten zhang in length, illuminating the camps of Bian Zhang and Han Sui; all their donkeys and horses brayed. The rebels considered it an ill omen and wanted to return to Jincheng. Dong Zhuo heard of this and was delighted. The next day, he joined forces with Youfufeng Bao Hong and others to launch a joint attack, achieving a great victory and beheading thousands of rebels. Bian Zhang and Han Sui fled in defeat to Yuzhong, so Zhang Wen sent Zhou Shen with 30,000 men to pursue and attack them. Zhang Wen's military advisor Sun Jian advised Zhou Shen: "The rebels have no grain in the city and must transport provisions from outside. I would be willing to lead 10,000 men and cut off their supply route. General, you can follow with the main force; the rebels will then become exhausted and too afraid to fight." "If they attempt to flee into Qiang territory, we can unite our forces to pursue them. In that case, Liangzhou will be pacified." Zhou Shen did not follow this advice and led his troops to besiege Yuzhong city instead. Meanwhile, Bian Zhang and Han Sui divided their forces and stationed themselves at Kuixuan Xia, cutting off Zhou Shen's supply route in return. Fearing this turn of events, Zhou Shen abandoned his wagons and supplies and retreated. At the same time, Zhang Wen had also dispatched Dong Zhuo with 30,00 troops to suppress the Xianling Qiang. Dong Zhuo was surrounded by the Qiang and Hu at the northern side of Wangyuan, where his provisions ran out completely, leaving him in a desperate situation with no clear path forward or retreat. He then set up fake fish traps in the river he intended to cross, pretending they were for fishing, while secretly leading his troops downstream through the trap area. By the time the rebels pursued them, the water had been released and the river was already too deep to cross. At that time, all other armies had suffered defeats and retreated, but only Dong Zhuo returned with his entire force intact. He stationed himself in Fufeng and was conferred the title Hou of Lixiang, with a fief of 1,000 households.

In spring of the third year, envoys were sent bearing symbols of authority to Chang'an to confer Zhang Wen with the title Taiwei. This was the first time a San Gong (Three Dukes) official had been appointed outside the capital, beginning with Zhang Wen. That winter, Zhang Wen was recalled to the capital. Han Sui then killed Bian Zhang as well as Bei Gong Boyu and Wen Hou, gathered more than 100, 000 troops under his command, and advanced to besiege Longxi. Taishou Li Xiangru rebelled, allied with Han Sui, and together they killed Cishi Geng Bi of Liangzhou. Meanwhile, Geng Bi's Sima (military officer) from Fufeng, Ma Teng, also raised troops and rebelled. Additionally, Wang Guo of Hanyang declared himself "Hezhong Jiangjun," and all joined forces with Han Sui. Together they elevated Wang Guo as their leader, placing full command of the troops under him, and launched raids in the Three Fu regions. In the fifth year, they laid siege to Chen Cang. Dong Zhuo was then appointed Qian Jiangjun and joined Zu Jiangjun Huangfu Song to defeat them. Han Sui and others again jointly deposed Wang Guo and seized Yan Zhong, the former Xindu Ling from Hanyang, forcing him to oversee and command all their factions. Yan Zhong was ashamed of being coerced by the crowd; he died of anger and grief. Han Sui and others gradually vied for power, killing each other in turn, causing their various factions to split apart completely.

In the sixth year, Dong Zhuo was summoned to serve as Shaofu but refused. He submitted a memorial stating: "The Yicong troops from Huangzhong and the Qihu soldiers I command have all come to me saying: 'Our wages are not fully paid, our stipends and gifts have been cut off, and our wives and children suffer from hunger and cold.'" They pulled at my carriage, preventing me from proceeding. The Qiang and Hu people are like dogs with broken intestines, showing pitiful behavior; I am unable to stop them, so I can only comply and comfort them. "Please increase the stipends once more." The imperial court was unable to control the situation and became somewhat concerned. When Emperor Ling fell seriously ill, an imperial decree was issued appointing Dong Zhuo Cimuzhi of Bingzhou and ordering him to transfer his troops under the command of Huangfu Song. Dong Zhuo again submitted a memorial saying: "I have neither the wisdom of old age nor any notable achievements in my youth. By mistake, I was favored by Heaven's grace and held military command for ten years. My soldiers, both senior and junior, have been familiar with me for a long time; they are attached to the kindness I have shown them in raising and nurturing them, and would be willing to fight for my life. I respectfully request permission to lead them northward to Bingzhou, where they may serve the empire on the frontier." Thus, he stationed his troops in Hedong and waited to observe developments.

When the emperor died, Grand General He Jin and Sili Jiaowei Yuan Shao plotted to eliminate the eunuchs, but the empress dowager refused. They then secretly summoned Dong Zhuo to bring his troops into the capital in order to intimidate her. Upon receiving this summons, Dong Zhuo immediately set out on his way. liğinde He also submitted a memorial stating: "The Zhongchangshi Zhang Rang and others have seized favor through flattery, corrupting the realm. I have heard that trying to stop boiling by pouring water over it is no match for removing the firewood; Though painful, tearing off a headscarf is better than letting poison fester within. In the past, Zhao Mang raised troops in Jianyang to expel wicked men from the emperor's side. Now I have sounded my bells and drums in Luoyang, requesting that Rang and others be arrested to clear away the corrupt and impure." Before Dong Zhuo arrived, He Jin was defeated. Hu 贲 Zhonglangjiang Yuan Shu then set fire to the Nan Gong palace in an attempt to attack the eunuchs; however, Zhongchangshi Duan Gui and others seized the young emperor and Prince of Chenliu and fled under cover of night toward Xiaopingjin. Dong Zhuo saw the distant fires and led his troops forward at full speed, arriving west of the city before dawn. Upon hearing that the young emperor was in Beimang, he went there to pay homage and escort him back. The emperor saw Dong Zhuo's troops arriving and became terrified, weeping with fear. Dong Zhuo spoke to him, but the emperor could not respond coherently; When he conversed with Prince of Chenliu, however, they discussed matters related to the calamity and chaos. Dong Zhuo considered the prince to be virtuous, and since he had been raised by Empress Dowager Dong, who was of the same clan as Dong Zhuo himself, he began to entertain thoughts of deposing or enthroning a new emperor.

Initially, when Dong Zhuo entered the capital, his infantry and cavalry numbered no more than 3,000. He was concerned that this small force would not be respected by people near or far. Therefore, every four to five days he secretly led troops out at night toward nearby camps; the next morning, he returned with a grand display of banners and drums, making it seem as if new western reinforcements had arrived. No one in Luoyang was aware of this deception. Soon after, the troops previously commanded by He Jin and his brother He Miao were all absorbed into Dong Zhuo's forces. Dong Zhuo also sent Lu Bu to kill Yiping Ding Yuan and incorporated his soldiers as well; thus, Dong Zhuo's military strength greatly increased. He then hinted to the imperial court that Sikong Liu Hong should be dismissed by edict and replaced by himself. With this in hand, he convened a meeting to discuss deposing or enthroning an emperor. At the grand assembly of officials, Dong Zhuo suddenly raised his head and declared: "The greatest is Heaven and Earth; next are sovereigns and ministers—this is the foundation of governance. "The current emperor is weak and ignorant, unfit to serve in the ancestral temple or rule over the empire." "Now I wish to follow the precedent of Yi Yin and Huo Guang, replacing the emperor with Prince Chenliu. What do you think?" The gongqing (high officials) and those below them dared not respond. Dong Zhuo then spoke out defiantly: "In the past, when Huo Guang decided on a new emperor, Yanian drew his sword. Whoever dares to oppose this great decision will be punished according to military law." Those present were greatly shaken. Only Shangshu Lu Zhi spoke up, saying: "In the past, Emperor Taijia was unfit after his enthronement and King Changyi committed more than a thousand crimes; thus, there were cases of deposing an emperor. The current emperor is still young and has not yet committed any moral failings—this situation cannot be compared to those previous cases." Dong Zhuo became greatly enraged and ended the meeting. The next day, he again gathered all officials at Chongde Qian Dian, threatened the empress dowager, and issued an edict to depose the young emperor. He declared: "The emperor is in mourning but shows no filial heart, and his demeanor does not befit a ruler. He shall now be deposed as King of Hongnong." He then enthroned Prince Chenliu; this was Emperor Xian. It was also decided that the empress dowager had pressured Empress Dowager Yongle so harshly that she died of grief, violating the proper etiquette between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law and showing no filial devotion. The former empress dowager was moved to Yongan Palace, where she eventually perished as if by assassination.

Dong Zhuo was promoted to Taiwei and retained the duties of Qian Jiangjun, receiving a symbol of authority with an axe and halberd as well as Hu 贲 guards. He was also regranted the title Hou of Mei. Dong Zhuo then joined Sikou Huang Wan and Sikong Yang Biao, all carrying axes of authority, to present a memorial at the palace gate, posthumously clearing Chen Fan, Dou Wu, and other members of the political faction in order to follow public sentiment. Thus, all the titles previously held by Chen Fan and others were restored, and their descendants were promoted for appointment.

Soon after, Dong Zhuo was advanced to Xiangguo (Prime Minister), allowed to enter the court without hurrying his pace and permitted to carry a sword and wear shoes on the imperial dais. His mother was conferred the title Jun of Chiyang, with officials appointed as her attendants.

At that time in Luoyang, noble families and relatives of the imperial family lived in grand mansions visible from one to another; gold, silk, wealth, and property were piled up abundantly in every household. Dong Zhuo let his soldiers run wild, breaking into homes, committing sexual violence against women, and looting property; this was called "Sou Lao." People lived in constant fear and anxiety, uncertain whether they would survive the day. When Empress He was buried, her Wenling mausoleum was opened, and Dong Zhuo took all the treasures stored inside. He also committed adultery with princesses, married off palace women as concubines, and imposed cruel punishments and arbitrary penalties; even a glance of anger could lead to death. Officials both inside and outside the court were unable to ensure their own safety. Dong Zhuo once sent troops to Yangcheng. At that time, the local people had gathered under a communal shrine; he ordered them all executed on the spot, loaded their wagons and belongings onto his vehicles, took their women with him, tied their heads to the yokes of the carts, and returned singing and shouting. He also destroyed the Wu Zhu coins and had small coins cast instead, melting down all bronze statues, bells, chimes, Filiang figures, and bronze horses in Luoyang and Chang'an to use as material for casting. As a result, goods became cheap while commodities became expensive; the price of grain reached tens of thousands per dan. Moreover, these coins had no rims or inscriptions and were inconvenient for people to use. At the time, people believed that Emperor Qin Shi Huang saw a tall man in Lin Tao and thus cast bronze figures. Dong Zhuo was a native of Lin Tao; now he had destroyed them. Although the nature of their destruction differed, their cruelty and brutality were similar.

Dong Zhuo had long heard that eunuchs were universally hated for killing loyal and virtuous officials. When he came to power, although he acted tyrannically, he still restrained his nature and feigned sentimentality in order to appoint a group of scholars and officials. He thus appointed Zhou Bi, Minister of Personnel from Hanyang; Wu Qiong, Attendant-in-Ordinary from Ru'nan; Zheng Gongye, Secretary; and He Yu, Chief Clerk. He appointed Xun Shuang, a recluse scholar, as Sikong (Minister of Works). Those who had been tainted by the Party 锢 Banishment, such as Chen Ji and Han Rong, were all appointed to high-ranking posts among the Nine Ministers. Many obscure scholars were thus promoted to prominence. He appointed Han Fu, Secretary of State, as Inspector of Ji Province; Liu Dai, Attendant-in-Ordinary, as Inspector of Yan Province; Kong Kai from Chenliu as Inspector of Yu Province; and Zhang Zi from Yingchuan as Governor of Nanyang. Those whom Dong Zhuo personally favored were not given prominent official posts, but only positions as military commanders or officers. In the first year of Chuping, Han Fu and others arrived at their posts. Together with more than ten followers of Yuan Shao, they each raised armies under the banner of righteousness and formed an alliance to attack Dong Zhuo, while Wu Qiong and Zhou Bi secretly acted as internal supporters from within.

Initially, at the end of Emperor Ling's reign, remnants of the Yellow Turban rebels such as Guo Tai rose again in Baibo Valley, Xihed, and moved to raid Taifang. They eventually broke through Hedong, causing civilians to flee across the Three Fu regions; they were called "Baibo bandits," with a force numbering over 100,000. Dong Zhuo sent Zhonglangjiang Niu Fu to attack them, but failed to repel the rebels. When he heard of the rising forces in the east, Dong Zhuo became frightened and thus poisoned Hongnong Wang (the Prince of Hongnong), intending to move the capital to Chang'an. During a court meeting, Grand Commandant Huang Wan and Chancellor Yang Biao argued against the move in vain, while Wu Qiong and Zou Bi also strongly advised against it. Dong Zhuo became furious and said, "When I first entered the court, these two gentlemen advised me to employ virtuous scholars, so I followed their advice. Yet now that you officials have taken office, you raise arms against me." "These two men betrayed me; why should I remain loyal to them?" He then had Wu Qiong and Zou Ji executed. Yang Biao and Huang Wan, fearing for their lives, went to Dong Zhuo to apologize, saying, "We are petty men who were attached to the old ways; we did not intend to hinder state affairs. Please hold us guilty only of being slow-witted." After killing Wu Qiong and Zou Bì, Dong Zhuo soon regretted it, so he submitted a memorial recommending Yang Biao and Huang Wan as Guanglu Daifu (Ministers of Ceremonial). Thus, the emperor was moved westward to Chang'an.

Initially, Chang'an had suffered from the Red Eyebrow Rebellion, during which all palaces and temples were burned to the ground. At that time, only the Gao Temple and the offices of Jingzhao remained intact; thus, it was convenient for the emperor to reside there. Later, they moved to Weiyang Palace. At that time, hundreds of thousands of people from Luoyang were forcibly relocated to Chang'an. On foot or horseback, they were driven in haste and trampled upon one another; hunger, banditry, and plundering ensued, with corpses piling up along the roads. Dong Zhuo stationed himself in Bigu Yuan and burned all palaces, temples, government offices, and private homes, leaving no survivors within two hundred li. He also ordered Lu Bu to excavate the tombs of all emperors and those of high-ranking officials down to lower ranks, seizing their treasures.

At that time, Sun Jian, the Governor of Changsha, also led troops from various commanderies of Yu Province to attack Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo first sent his generals Xu Rong and Li Meng on raids in all directions to capture and plunder. Xu Rong encountered Sun Jian at Liang, fought against him, defeated Sun Jian, captured alive Li Min, the Governor of Yingchuan, and boiled him to death. The soldiers from the righteous forces captured by Dong Zhuo were all wrapped in cloth, placed upside down on the ground, and killed by pouring hot fat over them.

At that time, Wang Kuang, Governor of Hedong, stationed his troops at Heyang Ferry, intending to attack Dong Zhuo. Dong Zhuo sent a decoy force to provoke the enemy, while secretly dispatching his elite troops across Xiaoping Ferry to attack from the north bank. He defeated them, and their forces were almost entirely wiped out. The following year, Sun Jian gathered his scattered troops and advanced to station at Yangren in Liang Xian. Dong Zhuo sent his generals Hu Zhen and Lu Bu to attack him. However, Lu Bu and Hu Zhen were unable to work well together; the troops became frightened on their own, and the soldiers scattered in chaos. Sun Jian pursued and attacked them, causing Hu Zhen and Lu Bu's forces to be defeated and flee. Dong Zhuo sent General Li Jue to Sun Jian to seek peace, but Sun Jian refused and did not accept. He then advanced his army through Dagu Pass, about ninety li from Luoyang. Dong Zhuo personally led his forces to fight Sun Jian among the tombs of former emperors. Dong Zhuo was defeated and fled, retreating to Minchi and gathering troops in Shan. Sun Jian advanced into Luoyang through the Xuanyang Gate and again attacked Lu Bu, who was once more defeated and driven away. Sun Jian then cleared the ancestral temples, leveled the tombs, and dispatched troops to go out through Hangu Pass, reaching between Xin'an and Minchi in order to cut off Dong Zhuo's retreat. Dong Zhuo said to his chief clerk Liu Ai, "The generals in the eastern passes have been defeated several times and are no match for us. Only Sun Jian is a bit reckless; you generals should be cautious of him." He then ordered Dong Yue, Eastern Zhonglangjiang, to station at Minchi; Duan Wei, Zhonglangjiang, at Huayin; Niu Fu, Zhonglangjiang, in Anyi. Other Zhonglangjiangs and Jiao Weis were stationed in various counties to guard against the forces from Shandong.

Dong Zhuo hinted to the imperial court, and Guanglu Xun Xu Fan was dispatched with a ceremonial staff to bestow upon Dong Zhuo the title of Taishi (Grand Tutor), ranking him above all marquises and kings. He then led his forces back to Chang'an. All the officials lined the road to greet and bow before him. Dong Zhuo then boldly imitated the imperial style of chariots and attire, riding in a carriage with a golden huabian (ornate canopy) and blue cover, with his claws painted on both sides of the carriage doors; at that time it was called a "Ganmo Chariot," meaning its decorations were nearly equal to those of an emperor. He appointed his younger brother Min as Left General and conferred on him the title Hou of Hu; he also made his nephew Huang an Attendant-in-Ordinary and Zhongjun Jiao Wei, both responsible for military affairs. At this time, members of his family, both close relatives and distant kin, all occupied prominent official positions. Even his grandchildren who were still in their childhood had all the boys enfeoffed as marquises and the girls granted titles of Jun (lady) over a fief.

He frequently held banquets with government officials, indulging in licentious pleasures and unrestrained revelry. He then built a fortified encampment to the east of Chang'an city for himself to reside in. He also constructed a fortress at Mei, with walls seven zhang high and thick, which was called "Wansui Wu." He stockpiled grain sufficient for thirty years of storage. He said to himself, "If my plans succeed, I will dominate the world; if they fail, holding this place alone is enough for me to spend out my old age." He once went to Mei to inspect his fortress, and officials down to the level of Grand Commandant bid him farewell at the gate outside Hengmen. Dong Zhuo set up a tent and banquet to lure hundreds of rebels from Beidi who had surrendered, then killed them all at the gathering. First he cut out their tongues, then severed their hands and feet, followed by piercing their eyes, and finally boiled them in a cauldron. Before they could die, they writhed between the cups and tables. Those present trembled in fear, dropping their chopsticks and spoons, while Dong Zhuo continued to eat and drink as if nothing had happened. If any of his generals made a misstep in speech or conduct, they were immediately executed before him. He also gradually exterminated the old aristocratic families from Guanzhong, falsely accusing them of rebellion and treason.

At that time, the imperial historian observed omens in the sky and said there would be a high-ranking official who died by execution. Dong Zhuo then had someone falsely accuse Zhang Wen, the Weiwei, of conspiring with Yuan Shu. He had Zhang Wen whipped in public and executed to avert the heavenly omen. Previously, when Zhang Wen was stationed at Meiyang and ordered Dong Zhuo to fight against Bian Zhang et al., he achieved no success. When Zhang Wen summoned him, Dong Zhuo did not respond promptly; even after arriving, his replies were disrespectful. At that time, Sun Jian was a military advisor to Zhang Wen and advised him to deploy troops and execute Dong Zhuo. Zhang Wen said, "Dong Zhuo has a reputation for valor; I am relying on him for the western campaign." Sun Jian said, "Your Excellency personally leads the imperial army and commands authority throughout the land. Why should you rely on Dong Zhuo?" Sun Jian said that in ancient times, renowned generals wielded axes and stood before their troops; none had failed to execute disobedient soldiers as a display of authority. Therefore, Rang Ju executed Zhuang Jia, and Wei Jiang killed Yang Gan. If we now let him go, it will undermine our authority; there will be no time to regret later!" Zhang Wen did not follow this advice, and Dong Zhuo still harbored resentment and suspicion, which is why he eventually met his downfall.

Zhang Wen, courtesy name Boshen, was a man of early reputation and had gradually risen to the ranks of high officials. He also secretly conspired with Chancellor Wang Yun to kill Dong Zhuo; however, before their plan could be carried out, he was killed. Wu Fu, a Jiao Wei of Yueqi Commandery from Ru'nan, was enraged by Dong Zhuo's cruelty and determined to kill him with his own hands. He therefore wore formal court attire and concealed a dagger in his robe when he met with Dong Zhuo. After Wu Fu finished speaking and took his leave, Dong Zhuo rose to see him off at the gate, placing a hand on his back. Taking advantage of this moment, Wu Fu drew out his dagger and tried to stab him, but missed. Dong Zhuo struggled free and immediately called for his attendants to seize and kill Wu Fu, shouting angrily, "This wretch dares to rebel!" Wu Fu shouted defiantly, "I regret not being able to tear this traitor apart in the city square to atone before heaven and earth!" He was killed before he could finish speaking.

At that time, Wang Yun conspired with Lu Bu and Shishu Shisun Rui to kill Dong Zhuo. Some people wrote the character "呂" on Lu Bu's back, carried him through the market, and sang, "Lu Bu!" Someone reported this to Dong Zhuo, but he did not realize the danger. In the fourth month of the third year, after the emperor had just recovered from an illness, a grand assembly was held in Weiyang Hall. Dong Zhuo put on his formal court attire and ascended the carriage, but soon after, his horse was startled and fell into mud; he returned to change clothes. His young wife tried to stop him, but Dong Zhuo refused to listen and proceeded anyway. He arranged troops along both sides of the road, from his encampment to the palace, with infantry on the left and cavalry on the right, surrounding the area in full formation. He ordered Lu Bu and others to guard the front and rear. Wang Yun then secretly informed Shisun Rui of the plan, and had Rui personally write an imperial edict to hand over to Lu Bu. He ordered Ji Duyi Li Su and more than ten other brave warriors loyal to Lu Bu to disguise themselves as palace guards inside Beiye Gate in preparation for Dong Zhuo's arrival. As Dong Zhuo approached, his horse became frightened and refused to move forward; he was alarmed and wanted to return. Lu Bu urged him to proceed, so he entered the gate. Li Su struck Dong Zhuo with a halberd, but his armor stopped the blow; he was wounded in the arm and fell from his carriage. Looking around, he shouted loudly, "Where is Lu Bu?" Lu Bu replied, "There is an imperial decree to punish traitors." Dong Zhuo shouted in rage, "You lowborn cur dare act like this?" Lu Bu immediately responded by thrusting a spear at Dong Zhuo and ordered the soldiers to behead him. Zhu bu Tian Yi and Dong Zhuo's former servant rushed toward his corpse, but Lu Bu killed them as well. They hurriedly delivered the pardon decree to announce it inside and outside the palace grounds. The soldiers all cried out "Ten thousand years!" while civilians danced and sang in the streets. In Chang'an, men and women sold their jewels and fine clothes to buy wine and meat for celebration; the streets were filled with people doing so. They sent Huangfu Song to attack Dong Zhuo's younger brother, Dong Min, at Mei Wu, killing his mother, wife, and children, and completely exterminated the family. Dong Zhuo's corpse was displayed in the marketplace. As the weather began to turn hot, Dong Zhuo's naturally plump body caused fat to drip from his corpse onto the ground. The guards watching over the corpse lit a fire in Dong Zhuo's navel, and the light burned until dawn; this continued for several days. Disciples of the Yuan family then gathered up Dong Zhuo's corpse, burned it to ashes, and scattered them along the road. The treasure stored in Mei Wu included 20,000 to 30,000 jin of gold and 80,000 or 90,000 jin silver. Silks, brocades, embroidered fabrics, fine linen, and rare treasures were piled up like hills.

Initially, Dong Zhuo had been the son-in-law of Niu Fu; he was always close and trusted by him, so Niu Fu stationed troops under his command at Sha. Niu Fu dispatched his subordinates, Jiao Wei Li Jue, Guo Si, and Zhang Ji, each leading tens of thousands of infantry and cavalry to defeat Zhu Jun, the governor of Henan Commandery, at Zhongmou. They then raided various counties in Chenliu and Yingchuan, killing men and women indiscriminately; wherever they passed, there were no survivors left. Lu Bu then sent Li Su with an imperial decree to Sha to attack Niu Fu and others. However, Niu Fu's forces confronted and fought against Li Su before he could arrive; Li Su was defeated and fled to Hongnong, where Lu Bu executed him. Later, without any apparent reason, a great commotion suddenly erupted in Niu Fu's camp; frightened, he took his gold and treasures with him and fled over the city wall. His attendants coveted his wealth, beheaded him, and sent his head to Chang'an.

Li Jue and Guo Si, because Wang Yun and Lu Bu had killed Dong Zhuo, became furious with the people of Bingzhou. All hundreds of men and women from Bingzhou who were in their army were executed. After Niu Fu was defeated, his troops had no one to rely on and wanted to disperse. Li Jue and others were afraid, so they first sent envoys to Chang'an to request a pardon. Wang Yun believed that it was not possible to issue another amnesty within the same year and refused their request. Li Jue and others became increasingly anxious and fearful, unsure of what to do next. Jia Xu, a native of Wuwei who was then in Li Jue's army, advised them, "I have heard that in Chang'an they are discussing plans to execute all Lianshou people. If you abandon your troops and travel alone, even a minor official like a town captain could capture you." "It would be better for all of us to march west together and attack Chang'an in order to avenge Dong Gong (Dong Zhuo)." If we succeed, we can support the imperial court and establish order throughout the land; if it does not work out, we can still flee later." Li Jue and others agreed with this plan. They said to one another, "The capital will not pardon us; we must resolve the matter with our lives." If we can capture Chang'an successfully, then we shall gain control of the entire realm. "If we fail, we will at least plunder the women and wealth from the three Fu regions, then return west to our hometowns; this might still allow us to prolong our lives." The troops agreed with this plan and thus formed an alliance. They led thousands of soldiers, traveling west day and night. Wang Yun heard about this and sent Dong Zhuo's former generals Hu Zhen and Xu Rong to attack them at Xinfeng. Xu Rong was killed in battle, while Hu Zhen surrendered with his troops. Along the way, Li Jue recruited more soldiers; by the time they reached Chang'an, their forces had grown to over 100,000. They joined with Dong Zhuo's former subordinates Fan Chou and Li Meng and others, surrounding Chang'an. The city walls were too high to be attacked directly; they besieged it for eight days, when a group of Lu Bu's soldiers defected from within and opened the gates for Li Jue's forces. The city defenses collapsed, and the troops were unleashed to loot and pillage, killing more than 10,000 people in the process. They killed Weiwei Zhong Fu and others. Lu Bu was defeated in battle and fled. Wang Yun escorted the emperor to take refuge on a tower at Xuanping Gate. At this time, an imperial pardon was declared throughout the realm. Li Jue, Guo Si and Fan Chou were all appointed as generals. They then surrounded the gate tower and jointly submitted a petition requesting Grand Tutor Wang Yun to come out, asking, "What crime did the Taishi (Grand Teacher) commit?" Wang Yun was cornered and had no choice but to descend. A few days later he was executed. Li Jue and others buried Dong Zhuo in Mei, collecting the ashes of his burned corpse that had been scattered along the road and placing them together into one coffin for burial. On the day of the burial, a violent wind and rainstorm occurred; thunder struck Dong Zhuo's tomb, causing water to flow into it and wash away his coffin.

Li Jue was then transferred to the position of Chaji General, established a separate administrative office, and concurrently held the post of Sili Jiao Wei (Inspector of the Imperial Secretariat), receiving authority over military commissions. Guo Si was later made a general, Fan Chou became You General (Right General), and Zhang Ji was appointed Zhendong General; all were enfeoffed as marquises. Li Jue, Guo Si, Fan Chou jointly held power in the imperial court. Zhang Ji was stationed outside at Hongnong. Jia Xu was appointed as the governor of Zuofengyi, and they intended to enfeoff him as a marquis. Jia Xu said, "This is merely a plan to save our lives; what merit could there be in it!" He firmly declined and the matter was dropped. Instead, he was appointed as a Shangshu (Minister) in charge of personnel selection.

The following summer, heavy rains fell day and night for more than twenty days, drowning the people and their homes; there were also winds as fierce as in winter. The emperor sent Yu Shi Pei Mao to investigate a case of imperial punishment, and pardoned more than 200 prisoners who were detained. Among them were people wrongfully imprisoned by Li Jue; fearing that Pei Mao might pardon them, Li Jue reported to the court that Pei had acted on his own authority in releasing prisoners and suspected foul play, requesting that he be arrested. The imperial decree stated: "Natural disasters and anomalies have occurred repeatedly, with heavy rains causing harm. The envoy carries the emperor's mandate to announce his grace and clemency, pardoning minor offenses in order to align with Heaven's will." "Is it your intention to release those wrongfully accused only to punish them again?" "Do not pursue the matter any further."

Initially, when Dong Zhuo entered Guan, he invited Han Sui and Ma Teng to jointly plan strategies for the eastern regions. Han Sui and Ma Teng saw that the empire was in chaos, so they also wanted to rely on Dong Zhuo to raise an army. In the first year of Xingping, Ma Teng came from Longyou to pay court homage and stationed his troops at Baqiao. At that time, Ma Teng had privately made a request of Li Jue but was denied, so he became angry. He then joined forces with Shi Zhong Ma Yu, You Zhonglangjiang Liu Fan, former Lianshou Commandery governor Zhong Shao, and Zhonglangjiang Du Bing to attack Li Jue; the battle lasted for several days without a decisive outcome. Han Sui, hearing of this, led his troops to come and attempt to mediate between Ma Teng and Li Jue. Soon after, however, he joined forces with Ma Teng again. Li Jue sent his nephew Li Li to join Guo Si and Fan Chou in fighting against Ma Teng's forces at the foot of Changping Guan. Han Sui and Ma Teng were defeated, with more than 10,00 heads beheaded. Zhong Shao, Liu Fan, and others all died in the battle. Han Sui and Ma Teng fled back to Lianshou, but Fan Chou's forces pursued them again. Han Sui sent a message to Fan Chou, saying: "The future of the empire is uncertain. We are fellow townspeople; although we have had minor disagreements now, in the end we must be united. I wish to speak with you." They then rode side by side, clasped each other's arms, and laughed and talked for a long time. When the troops returned, Li Li reported to Li Jue: "Fan Chou and Han Sui rode side by side laughing and talking. I did not hear their words, but they appeared very close in affection." From then on, Li Jue and Fan Chou began to suspect each other. Nevertheless, they still granted Fan Chou and Guo Si the authority to establish their own administrative offices; together with the Three Dukes, these six offices were collectively known as the "Six Fu," all of which participated in personnel appointments.

At that time, bandits and thieves in Chang'an could not be restrained; they committed robberies openly during the day. Li Jue, Guo Si Fan Chou divided the city into three sections to control their respective territories, but still failed to bring order. Moreover, their subordinates acted recklessly, oppressing the common people. At that time, a single hu of grain cost 500,000 qian, and beans or wheat cost 200,000 each. People ate one another; white bones littered the fields, and stench filled the roads. The emperor sent Shi Yu Shi Hou Wen to distribute rice and beans from the imperial granary to make porridge for starving people, but despite this aid, deaths continued unabated. The emperor suspected that there might be fraud in the distribution of relief supplies and personally inspected the process before his court. After discovering it was untrue, he sent Shi Zhong Liu Ai to reprimand the responsible officials. As a result, all officials from the Shangshu Ling (Minister of Personnel) downward went to the provincial office to apologize and submitted a memorial requesting that Hou Wen be detained for investigation. The imperial decree stated: "I cannot bear to punish Wu Wen severely, but he may be flogged fifty times." From then on, many more people were saved and assisted.

The following spring, Li Jue took the opportunity to assassinate Fan Chou during a meeting. From then on, the various generals began to suspect and distrust one another, so Li Jue and Guo Si once again raised their troops to fight each other. Yang Ding, the Anxi General, was formerly a subordinate general under Dong Zhuo's command. Fearing that Li Jue would harm him, he conspired with Guo Si to invite the emperor to stay at their camp. Li Jue learned of this plan and immediately sent his nephew Li Xian, leading several thousand men, to surround the palace. He used three carriages to escort the emperor and empress dowager. Taiwei Yang Biao said to Li Xian: "Since ancient times, no emperor or ruler has ever resided in the home of a subject." "Your actions should align with Heaven's will. How can you act like this!" Li Xian replied, "The general has already made his decision." Thus the emperor went to Li Jue's camp, and Yang Biao and others all followed along. The disorderly troops entered the palace, looting the belongings of palace attendants. Li Jue also moved gold and silk from the imperial treasury as well as ceremonial items and garments for the emperor's use, then set fire to the palaces, government offices, and private residences, burning them all down completely. The emperor sent Yang Biao along with Taike Zhang Xi and more than ten others to mediate between Li Jue and Guo Ji, but Guo Ji refused. As a result, he took the high-ranking officials hostage. Yang Biao said to Guo Ji: "General, you are a man of understanding. Why do you and the general quarrel over such matters? One seizes the emperor by force while another holds high officials hostage—can this be acceptable?" Guo Ji became furious and wanted to kill Yang Biao with his own hands. Yang Biao said, "If you still dare to defy the state, how could I possibly seek my own survival!" After many of his attendants advised against it, Guo Ji finally desisted. Guo Ji then led his troops to attack Li Jue; arrows flew as close as the emperor's presence and one even pierced Li Jue's ear. Li Jue's general Yang Feng, originally a bandit leader of the Baibo rebels, led his troops to rescue Li Jue. As a result, Guo Ji's forces withdrew.

On that day, Li Jue once again moved the emperor to his northern fortress, where only the empress and Lady Song were present. Li Jue ordered a jiao wei officer to guard the gates, cutting off all communication between inside and outside. Soon afterward, Li Jue planned once again to move the emperor to Huangbai Cheng in Chiyang, causing great alarm among both ruler and subjects. Taike Zhao Wen earnestly advised and persuaded him, so he finally desisted. An imperial decree was issued sending Ye Zha Puye Huangfu Li to mediate between Li Jue, Guo Ji and others. Huangfu Li first reasoned with Guo Ji, who then immediately obeyed the order. He then went to Li Jue, but Li Jue refused to listen. Said: "Guo Ji is merely a bandit who stole horses; how dare he wish to be on equal footing with me!" "He must be executed." "You may observe my strategies and the strength of my troops—am I not capable of dealing with Guo Ji?" Guo Ji once again seized high-ranking officials as hostages. "Acting in such a manner, how can you possibly expect to control or manipulate him!" Guo Ji's courtesy name was Duo. Huangfu Li said, "Now Guo Ji has taken the high officials as hostages while you threaten the emperor—whose actions are more serious?" Li Jue became angry, ordered Huangfu Li away, and then instructed Hu Ben Wang Chang to pursue and kill him. Wang Chang pretended not to catch up, so Huangfu Li was able to escape unharmed. Li Jue then appointed himself as the Daisima (Grand Marshal). For months, Li Jue and Guo Ji fought against each other continuously, with tens of thousands killed.

Zhang Ji came from Shan to mediate between the two men and proposed relocating the emperor temporarily to Hongnong. The emperor also missed his former capital, so he sent envoys repeatedly to Li Jue requesting permission to return eastward. After ten such requests, Li Jue finally agreed. On the same day, the imperial procession set out on its journey. Li Jue left to take up a garrison at Cao Yang. Zhang Ji was appointed as the Biaoqi General and returned to his garrison in Shan. Guo Ji was promoted to Juqi General, Yang Ding to Hou General, and Yang Feng to Xingyi General. łoż Dong Cheng, a former subordinate of Niu Fu, was also appointed as Anji General. Guo Ji and the others all accompanied the imperial procession as attendants. Guo Ji then once again attempted to force the emperor to go to Mei, but Yang Ding, Yang Feng, and Cheng refused to comply. Fearing that a crisis might arise, Guo Ji abandoned his troops and returned to Li Jue for support. The imperial procession advanced as far as Huayin. Duan Wei, the Ningji General, prepared ceremonial attire for the emperor and supplies for the officials down to the lower ranks, requesting that the emperor stay at his camp. Initially, Yang Ding had a conflict with Duan Wei and thus falsely accused him of planning to rebel. He then attacked Duan Wei's camp but failed to capture it after more than ten days. Yet, despite the conflict, Duan Wei still provided food for the imperial household and supplies to all government officials, remaining loyal without any second thoughts.

After realizing regret over having allowed the emperor to move east, Li Jue and Guo Shi came to rescue Duan Wei. They then intended to seize the emperor and take him westward. Yang Ding was blocked by Guo Ji during this attempt and fled to Jingzhou. Meanwhile, Zhang Ji had a conflict with Yang Feng and Dong Cheng. He therefore turned against them and joined forces with Li Jue and Guo Shui to pursue the imperial procession, engaging in a major battle at the eastern stream of Hongnong. Dong Cheng and Yang Feng's forces were defeated, with an incalculable number of officials and soldiers killed. They abandoned their wives, children, supplies, and equipment, as well as imperial items, seals, records, and documents—leaving nothing behind. She Sheng Jiao Wei Ju Jun was wounded and fell from his horse. Li Jue asked those around him, "Is he still alive?" Jun cursed at them and said, "You villains have forced the emperor into submission. There has never been a more treacherous minister or traitorous son than you!" Li Jue ordered him to be killed. The emperor thus took shelter in the open at Cao Yang. Dong Cheng and Yang Feng then deceived Li Jue et al. into making peace, while secretly sending a discreet envoy to Hedong to recruit the former Baibo leader Li Le, Han Xian, Hu Cai, and Youxian Wang Qubi of the Southern Xiongnu. Together they led thousands of cavalrymen who came to join Dong Cheng and Yang Feng in attacking Li Jue et al., defeating them decisively with several thousand enemy heads cut off, allowing the imperial procession to proceed forward. Dong Cheng and Li Le guarded the emperor's left and right sides, while Hu Cai, Yang Feng, Han Xian, and Qubi formed the rear guard. Li Jue et al. launched another attack, but were decisively defeated by Yang Feng et al., with more deaths than in the battle at Dongjian. From the battlefield of Dongjian, continuous battles stretched for forty li before they finally reached Shan, where they established a camp to defend themselves. At that time, after the devastation of war, the Hu Ben and Yu Lin imperial guards numbered fewer than a hundred men, all of whom had become disloyal. At night, Dong Cheng, Yang Feng and others secretly discussed crossing the river, sending Li Le ahead to prepare boats on the other side and lighting a fire as a signal. The emperor walked out of camp, arriving at the riverbank where he intended to cross. The riverbank was more than ten zhang high, so they lowered him down using silk ropes. The rest of the people either crawled along the riverbank or jumped from above, resulting in deaths and injuries so severe that they no longer recognized one another. Those scrambling to board the boats could not be restrained, and Dong Cheng used his halberd to beat them back. So many fingers were severed in the boat that they could be scooped up by handfuls. Only the empress, Lady Song, Yang Biao, Dong Cheng, and several dozen others including Fu Wan, the emperor's father-in-law and commander of the Jinwu Guard, managed to cross safely. The palace attendants were all seized by Li Jue's soldiers; many froze or drowned in the river and died. After arriving at Dayang, they stayed temporarily in a civilian home before proceeding to Li Le's camp. The officials were starving, so Zhang Yang, the Tai Shou of Hedong, sent several thousand people to carry rice and supplies as tribute. The emperor then rode in a cart pulled by oxen and established his capital at Anyi. Wang Yi, the Tai Shou of He Dong, presented tribute in the form of silk and cloth, which was distributed to all officials down to the lower ranks. Yi was enfeoffed as a Lie Hou, Hu Cai appointed as the Zhongdong General, and Zhang Yang as the An Guo General; all were granted authority with imperial seals and allowed to establish their own offices. The encampments vied to raise their banners, competing for official appointments. The demand for seals was so great that they could not keep up with the carving of new ones, and eventually resorted to marking them with a awl instead. Some brought wine and meat for banquets in the emperor's presence. The emperor also sent Tai Pu Han Rong to Hongnong to negotiate peace with Li Jue, Guo Shi and others. Li Jue then released the high-ranking officials and government ministers, returning some of the palace attendants and their families as well as items from the imperial household.

Initially, when the emperor entered Guan, there were still hundreds of thousands of households in San Fu. However, after Li Jue and Guo Shi fought each other and the emperor returned eastward, Chang'an remained deserted for more than forty days. The strong scattered in all directions while the weak resorted to cannibalism; within two or three years, there was no sign of human life left in Guan Zhong. In the spring of Jian'an Year 1, as various generals vied for power, Han Xian launched an attack on Dong Cheng. Dong Cheng fled to Zhang Yang, who then sent him ahead to repair the Lu Palace. In July, the emperor returned to Luoyang and stayed at Yang'an Hall. Zhang Yang considered it his achievement, so he named the hall "Yang" in his honor. He then said to the various generals: "The emperor belongs to all under heaven. The court has its own high officials and ministers; Zhang Yang should go out to defend against external threats, not remain in the capital for such matters." Zhang Yang then returned to Yewang. Yang Feng also left to take up garrison at Liang. Zhang Yang was appointed as Daisima, Yang Feng as Juqi General, and Han Xian as Da Jiang Jun (Grand General) and concurrently as Shili Jiao Wei. All were granted imperial seals and authority with axes of command. Han Xian and Dong Cheng both remained to serve in the palace guard.

Han Xian, proud of his achievements and arrogant, meddled in political affairs; Dong Cheng was troubled by this and secretly summoned Cao Cao, the Zhuzhou of Yuan Zhou. Cao Cao then went to court to present tribute and reported to the high officials and lower ranks, using this opportunity to submit a memorial detailing the crimes of Han Xian and Zhang Yang. Fearing punishment, Han Xian fled alone on horseback to Yang Feng. The emperor, considering that Han Xian and Yang Feng had previously assisted the imperial procession, issued an edict stating that no further inquiry should be made into their actions. At this time, Wei Jiang Jun Dong Cheng, Fu Guo Jiang Jun Fu Wan and more than ten others were enfeoffed as Lie Hou. Ju Jun was posthumously awarded the position of Tai Shou of Hongnong. Cao Cao, considering Luoyang to be ruined and desolate, moved the emperor's court to Xu. Yang Feng and Han Xian intended to intercept the imperial procession but failed. Cao Cao attacked them, forcing Yang Feng and Han Xian to flee to Yuan Shu, where they then unleashed violence in the regions of Yang and Xu. The following year, Zuo Jiang Jun Liu Bei lured Yang Feng into a trap and beheaded him. Han Xian was frightened and fled back to Bing Zhou, but along the way he was killed by others. Hu Cai remained in Hedong while Li Le stayed there as well; Hu Cai was killed by his enemies, and Li Le died of illness. Zhang Ji, suffering from hunger, went out to Nanyang, attacked Rang, and was killed in battle. Guo Shi was killed by his own general Wu Xi.

In the third year, Ye Zha Puye Pei Mao was sent by imperial decree to command various generals in Guan Zhong, including Duan Wei et al., to campaign against Li Jue and exterminate his three clans. Duan Wei was appointed as Annan Jiang Jun and enfeoffed as the Marquis of Kun Xiang.

In the fourth year, Zhang Yang was killed by his general Yang Chou. Dong Cheng was appointed as Cheqi Jiang Jun and granted authority to establish a separate office.

After the capital was moved to Xu, power fell into Cao's family hands; the emperor retained his title but had no real authority, and officials merely held nominal positions. The emperor was wary of Cao Cao's monopolization of power and thus secretly issued an edict to Dong Cheng, ordering him to recruit righteous men from around the world to conspire against and kill Cao Cao. Dong Cheng then conspired with Liu Bei, but before the plot could be carried out, Liu Bei was sent on a military campaign. Dong Cheng then formed an alliance with Bian Jiang Jun Wang Fu, Changshui Jiao Wei Zhong Ji, and Yi Lang Wu Shuo to continue the conspiracy. When the plot was exposed, Dong Cheng, Wang Fu, Zhong Ji, and Wu Shuo were all executed by Cao Cao.

Han Sui and Ma Teng returned to Liang Zhou on their own, engaged in mutual warfare, and then descended from Long Shan to occupy Guan Zhong. At that time, Cao Cao was occupied with affairs in He Bei and feared they might take advantage of the situation to cause chaos. In the seventh year, he therefore appointed Ma Teng as Zhengnan Jiang Jun and Han Sui as Zhengxi Jiang Jun, both granted authority to establish separate offices. Later, Duan Wei was summoned to serve as Da Honglu but died of illness before assuming the post. Ma Teng was again summoned and appointed as Weiwei, and enfeoffed as Marquis of Huili. Ma Teng accepted the summons but left his son Ma Chao to command his troops. In the sixteenth year, Ma Chao and Han Sui raised a rebellion in Guan Zhong against Cao Cao. Cao Cao defeated them; Han Sui and Ma Chao were routed and fled, while Ma Teng was executed along with his three clans for treason. Ma Chao attacked and killed the Liang Zhou Cishi Wei Kang, then once again occupied Long You. In the nineteenth year, Yang Fu of Tian Shui defeated Ma Chao, who fled to Hanzhong and surrendered to Liu Bei. Han Sui fled into the Qiang territory in Jincheng but was killed by his subordinates. Initially, Zong Jian of Longxi resided in Fuhang and proclaimed himself "Heshou Pinghan Wang," appointing officials and establishing a government for about thirty years. Cao Cao then dispatched Xiahou Yuan to attack Zong Jian, who was killed in the campaign; thus, Liang Zhou was completely pacified.

Commentary: Dong Zhuo initially gained prominence through his fierce reputation. Taking advantage of the chaotic circumstances following a major collapse, he was able to trample upon conventional morality and destroy the imperial order in the capital region. With a nature as cruel as carving out livers and chopping off toes, the lives of countless people were insufficient to satisfy his desires. Yet he still showed some restraint toward the literati class, hesitating before committing violent acts—still, there was an element of banditry in his conduct. When the remaining marauders took advantage of this, they overturned mountains and seas. The fire from Kun Gang began to burn, and the chaotic chapters of history reached their peak at this point. Alas! How difficult it is for a person to live! How profoundly unfeeling the heavens and earth are!

Eulogy: In times of great upheaval, chaos and destruction become inevitable. Dong Zhuo's tyranny was overwhelming; he defied the natural order of heaven, earth, and humanity. The central lands were in turmoil like boiling water, while the imperial capital lay shrouded in smoke and dust. Though disorder had already spread, its ill omens continued to expand further. Arrows were aimed at Wang Lu; military conflicts entangled the Wei regime's destiny. The realm was thrown into chaos, and both humanity and spirits were tossed in turmoil.
